Rahab Hides the Spies

(Heb 11:31 )

Then Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126 sent^H7971 two^H8147 men^H376 as spies^H7270 secretly^H2791 from Shittim^H7851, saying^H559, “Go^H1980, see^H7200 the land^H776, especially^H853 Jericho^H3405.” So they went^H1980 and came^H935 into the house^H1004 of a harlot^H802^H2181 whose name^H8034 was Rahab^H7343 and [fn]lodged^H7901 there^H8033.

Jos 2:2

Jos 2:2And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”

Jos 2:3

Jos 2:3And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”

Jos 2:4

Jos 2:4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.

Jos 2:5

Jos 2:5“Now it happened when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.”

Jos 2:6

Jos 2:6But she had brought them up to the roof and concealed them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof.

Jos 2:7

Jos 2:7So the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords; and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.

Jos 2:8

Now before^H2962 they lay^H7901 down^H7901, [fn]she came^H5927 up^H5927 to them on the roof^H1406

Jos 2:9

Jos 2:9and said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have [fn]melted away before you.

Jos 2:10

Jos 2:10“For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the [fn]Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you [fn]devoted to destruction.

Jos 2:11

Jos 2:11“Indeed we heard it, and our hearts melted, and a courageous spirit no longer rose up in any man because of you; for Yahweh your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

Jos 2:12

Jos 2:12“So now, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have shown lovingkindness to you, that you also will show lovingkindness to my father’s household and give me a pledge of [fn]truth,

Jos 2:13

Jos 2:13and preserve my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters alive, with all who belong to them, and deliver our [fn]lives from death.”

Jos 2:14

Jos 2:14So the men said to her, “Our [fn]life [fn]for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it will be when Yahweh gives us the land that we will show lovingkindness and truth to you.”

The Oath to Rahab

Jos 2:15

Then she let^H3381 them down^H3381 by a rope^H2256 through^H1157 the window^H2474, for her house^H1004 was on the city^H7023 wall^H2346, so that she was living^H3427 on the wall^H2346.

Jos 2:16

Jos 2:16And she said to them, “Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers reach you. And hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.”

Jos 2:17

Jos 2:17And the men said to her, “We shall be free from this oath [fn]to you which you have made us swear,

Jos 2:18

Jos 2:18 [fn]unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household.

Jos 2:19

Jos 2:19“And it will be that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him.

Jos 2:20

Jos 2:20“But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear.”

Jos 2:21

Jos 2:21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they went; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

Jos 2:22

And they went^H1980 and came^H935 to the hill^H2022 country^H2022 and remained^H3427 there^H8033 for three^H7969 days^H3117 until^H5704 the pursuers^H7291 returned^H7725. The pursuers^H7291 had sought^H1245 them [fn]all^H3605 along the road^H1870 but had not found^H4672 them.

Jos 2:23

Jos 2:23Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they recounted to him all that had happened to them.

Jos 2:24

Jos 2:24And they said to Joshua, “Surely Yahweh has given all the land into our hands; moreover, all the inhabitants of the land have [fn]melted away before us.”
