Manasseh’s Inheritance

And this was the lot^H1486 for the tribe^H4294 of Manasseh^H4519, for he was the firstborn^H1060 of Joseph^H3130. To Machir^H4353 the firstborn^H1060 of Manasseh^H4519, the father^H1 of Gilead^H1568, [fn]were allotted^H1961 Gilead^H1568 and Bashan^H1316, because^H3588 he was a man^H376 of war^H4421.

Jos 17:2

Jos 17:2So the lot was made for the rest of the sons of Manasseh according to their families: for the sons of Abiezer and for the sons of Helek and for the sons of Asriel and for the sons of Shechem and for the sons of Hepher and for the sons of Shemida; these were the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the males according to their families.

Jos 17:3

However, Zelophehad^H6765, the son^H1121 of Hepher^H2660, the son^H1121 of Gilead^H1568, the son^H1121 of Machir^H4353, the son^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519, had^H1961 no^H3808 sons^H1121, only^H3588^H518 daughters^H1323; and these^H428 are the names^H8034 of his daughters^H1323: Mahlah^H4244 and Noah^H5270, Hoglah^H2295, Milcah^H4435 and Tirzah^H8656.

Jos 17:4

Jos 17:4And they came near before Eleazar the priest and before Joshua the son of Nun and before the leaders, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So according to the [fn]word of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.

Jos 17:5

Jos 17:5Thus there fell ten portions to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan,

Jos 17:6

Jos 17:6because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

Jos 17:7

And the border^H1366 of Manasseh^H4519 [fn]ran^H1961 from Asher^H836 to Michmethath^H4366 which^H834 was east^H5921^H6440 of Shechem^H7927; then the border^H1366 went^H1980 [fn]southward^H3225 to the inhabitants^H3427 of En-tappuah^H5887.

Jos 17:8

Jos 17:8The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the sons of Ephraim.

Jos 17:9

Jos 17:9And the border went down to the [fn]brook of Kanah, southward of the [fn]brook (these cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh), and the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the [fn]brook, and [fn]it ended at the sea.

Jos 17:10

Jos 17:10The south side belonged to Ephraim and the north side to Manasseh, and the sea was [fn]their border; and they reached to Asher on the north and to Issachar on the east.

Jos 17:11

Jos 17:11And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, the third is Napheth.

Jos 17:12

Jos 17:12But the sons of Manasseh could not take possession of these cities because the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.

Jos 17:13

Jos 17:13Now it happened that when the sons of Israel became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not dispossess them completely.

Jos 17:14

Then the sons^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 spoke^H1696 to Joshua^H3091, saying^H559, “Why^H4069 have you given^H5414 me only one^H259 lot^H1486 and one^H259 portion^H2256 for an inheritance^H5159, since I am a numerous^H7227 people^H5971 whom^H834 Yahweh^H3068 has thus^H3541 far^H5704 blessed^H1288?”

Jos 17:15

Jos 17:15And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go [fn]up to the forest and [fn]clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”

Jos 17:16

Jos 17:16And the sons of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the valley land have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth-shean and its towns and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.”

Jos 17:17

Jos 17:17Then Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, “You are a numerous people and have great power; you shall not have one lot only,

Jos 17:18

Jos 17:18but the hill country shall be yours. For though it is a forest, you shall [fn]clear it, and to its [fn]farthest borders it shall be yours; for you shall dispossess the Canaanites, even though they have chariots of iron and even though they are strong.”
