The Healing at Bethesda

After^G3326 these^G3778 things^G3778 there was a feast^G1859 of the Jews^G2453, and Jesus^G2424 went^G305 up^G305 to Jerusalem^G2414.

Jhn 5:2

Now^G1161 there is in Jerusalem^G2414 by the sheep^G4262 gate a pool^G2861, which is called^G1951 in [fn]Hebrew^G1447 [fn]Bethesda^G964, having^G2192 five^G4002 porticoes^G4745.

Jhn 5:3

Jhn 5:3In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [fn][waiting for the moving of the waters;

Jhn 5:4

Jhn 5:4for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever sickness with which he was afflicted.]

Jhn 5:5

Jhn 5:5And a man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.

Jhn 5:6

Jhn 5:6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been sick a long time, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?”

Jhn 5:7

Jhn 5:7The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

Jhn 5:8

Jhn 5:8Jesus *said to him, “Get up, pick up your mat and walk.”

Jhn 5:9

Jhn 5:9And immediately the man became well, and picked up his mat and began to walk.

Now^G1161 it was the Sabbath^G4521 on that day^G2250.

Jhn 5:10

Jhn 5:10So the Jews were saying to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.”

Jhn 5:11

Jhn 5:11But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”

Jhn 5:12

Jhn 5:12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?”

Jhn 5:13

Jhn 5:13But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.

Jhn 5:14

Jhn 5:14Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”

Jhn 5:15

Jhn 5:15The man went away, and disclosed to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jhn 5:16

Jhn 5:16And for this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

Jhn 5:17

Jhn 5:17But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Jesus’ Equality with the Father

Jhn 5:18

Jhn 5:18For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

Jhn 5:19

Jhn 5:20

Jhn 5:20“For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.

Jhn 5:21

Jhn 5:21“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

Jhn 5:22

Jhn 5:22“For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,

Jhn 5:23

Jhn 5:23so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Jhn 5:24

“Truly^G281, truly^G281, I say^G3004 to you, he who hears^G191 My word^G3056, and believes^G4100 Him who sent^G3992 Me, has^G2192 eternal^G166 life^G2222, and does not come^G2064 into judgment^G2920, but has passed^G3327 out of death^G2288 into life^G2222.

Two Resurrections

Jhn 5:25

Jhn 5:25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

Jhn 5:26

Jhn 5:26“For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;

Jhn 5:27

Jhn 5:27and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is [fn]the Son of Man.

Jhn 5:28

Jhn 5:28“Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,

Jhn 5:29

Jhn 5:29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

Jhn 5:30

Jhn 5:31

“If^G1437 I alone bear^G3140 witness^G3140 about^G4012 Myself^G1683, My witness^G3141 is not [fn]true^G227.

Jhn 5:32

Jhn 5:32“There is another who bears witness about Me, and I know that the witness which He gives about Me is true.

Jhn 5:33“You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.

Jhn 5:34

Jhn 5:34“But the witness I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

Jhn 5:35“He was the lamp that was burning and shining and you were willing to rejoice for [fn]a while in his light.

Jhn 5:36“But the witness I have is greater than the witness of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness about Me, that the Father has sent Me.
