Jesus Betrayed and Arrested

(Mat 26:47–56; Mar 14:43–52; Luk 22:47–53 )

When Jesus^G2424 had spoken^G3004 these^G3778 words, He went^G1831 forth^G1831 with His disciples^G3101 to the other^G4008 side^G4008 of^G4008 the Kidron^G2748 Valley^G5493, where^G3699 there was a garden^G2779, into which^G3739 He entered^G1525 [fn]with His disciples^G3101.

Jhn 18:2

Jhn 18:2Now Judas also, who was [fn]betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often gathered there with His disciples.

Jhn 18:3

Jhn 18:3Judas then, having received the Roman [fn]cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jhn 18:4So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, “Whom do you seek?”

Jhn 18:5

Jhn 18:5They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.

Jhn 18:6So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Jhn 18:7

Jhn 18:7Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

Jhn 18:8Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,”

Jhn 18:9

Jhn 18:9in order that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled, “Of those whom You have given Me, I lost not one.”

Jhn 18:10Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus.

Jhn 18:11So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

Jhn 18:12

Jhn 18:13

Jhn 18:13and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

Jhn 18:14Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die on behalf of the people.

And Simon^G4613 Peter^G4074 was following^G190 Jesus^G2424, and so was another^G243 disciple^G3101. Now^G1161 that disciple^G3101 was known^G1110 to the high^G749 priest^G749, and entered^G4897 with Jesus^G2424 into the court^G833 of the high^G749 priest^G749,

Jhn 18:16but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.

Jhn 18:17Then the servant-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He *said, “I am not.”

Jhn 18:18

Jhn 18:18Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

The high^G749 priest^G749 then^G3767 questioned^G2065 Jesus^G2424 about^G4012 His disciples^G3101, and about^G4012 His teaching^G1322.

Jhn 18:20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in [fn]synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.

Jhn 18:21“Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; behold, they know what I said.”

Jhn 18:22

Jhn 18:22And when He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby gave Jesus a slap, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?”

Jhn 18:23Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”

Jhn 18:24

Jhn 18:24So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Jhn 18:25

Now^G1161 Simon^G4613 Peter^G4074 was standing^G2476 and warming^G2328 himself. So^G3767 they said^G3004 to him, “You are not also^G2532 one of His disciples^G3101, are you?” He denied^G720 it, and said^G3004, “I am^G1510 not.”

Jhn 18:26One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”

Jhn 18:27

Jhn 18:27Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Jhn 18:29

Jhn 18:29Therefore Pilate went out to them and *said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”

Jhn 18:30

Jhn 18:30They answered and said to him, “If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.”

Jhn 18:31

Jhn 18:31So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”

Jhn 18:32

Jhn 18:32in order that the word of Jesus which He spoke would be fulfilled, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

Jhn 18:33

Therefore^G3767 Pilate^G4091 entered^G1525 again^G3825 into the Praetorium^G4232, and summoned^G5455 Jesus^G2424 and said^G3004 to Him, “Are You the King^G935 of the Jews^G2453?”

Jhn 18:34

Jhn 18:34Jesus answered, “Are you saying this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?”

Jhn 18:35

Jhn 18:35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what did You do?”

Jhn 18:36

Jhn 18:36Jesus answered, “My kingdom [fn]is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [fn]from here.”

Jhn 18:37

Jhn 18:37Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You yourself said I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

Jhn 18:38

Jhn 18:38Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And when he had said^G3004 this^G3778, he went^G1831 out^G1831 again^G3825 to the Jews^G2453 and *said^G3004 to them, “I find^G2147 no^G3762 guilt^G156 in Him.

Jhn 18:39“But you have a custom that I release someone [fn]for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release [fn]for you the King of the Jews?”
