Yahweh’s Warning from the Temple Gate

(cf. Jer 26:4–6 )

The word^H1697 that came^H1961 to Jeremiah^H3414 from Yahweh^H3068, saying^H559,

Jer 7:2“Stand in the gate of the house of Yahweh, and you shall call out there this word, and you shall say, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship Yahweh!’”

Jer 7:3

Jer 7:3Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Make your ways and your deeds good, and I will let you dwell in this place.

Jer 7:4

Jer 7:4“Do not trust in lying words, saying, ‘[fn]This is the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh.’

Jer 7:5

Jer 7:5“For if you truly make your ways and your deeds good, if you truly do justice between a man and his neighbor,

Jer 7:6

Jer 7:6if you do not oppress the sojourner, the [fn]orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your own evil demise,

Jer 7:7

Jer 7:7then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

Jer 7:8

“Behold^H2009, you are trusting^H982 in lying^H8267 words^H1697 to no^H1115 avail^H3276.

Jer 7:9

Jer 7:9“Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery and swear while lying, and burn incense to Baal and walk after other gods that you have not known,

Jer 7:10

Jer 7:10then come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—that you may do all these abominations?

Jer 7:11

Jer 7:11“Has this house, which is called by My name, become a robbers’ den in your sight? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” declares Yahweh.

Jer 7:12

“But go^H1980 now^H4994 to My place^H4725 which^H834 was in Shiloh^H7887, where^H834^H8033 I made My name^H8034 dwell^H7931 at the first^H7223, and see^H7200 what^H834 I did^H6213 to it because^H4480^H6440 of the evil^H7451 of My people^H5971 Israel^H3478.

Jer 7:13

Jer 7:13“And now, because you have done all these works,” declares Yahweh, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you but you did not answer,

Jer 7:14

Jer 7:14therefore, I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

Jer 7:15

Jer 7:15“I will cast you out of My presence, as I have cast out all your brothers, all the seed of Ephraim.

Jer 7:16

“As for you, do not pray^H6419 for this^H2088 people^H5971 and do not lift^H5375 up^H5375 a cry^H7440 of lamentation^H7440 or prayer^H8605 for them and do not intercede^H6293 with Me, for I am not hearing^H8085 you.

Jer 7:17

Jer 7:17“Are you not seeing what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Jer 7:18

Jer 7:18“The [fn]children gather wood, and the fathers make the fire burn, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to provoke Me.

Jer 7:19

Jer 7:19“Do they provoke Me?” declares Yahweh. “Is it not themselves they provoke to the shame of their own face?”

Jer 7:20

Jer 7:20Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

Jer 7:21

Thus^H3541 says^H559 Yahweh^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478, “Add^H3254 your burnt^H5930 offerings^H5930 to your sacrifices^H2077 and eat^H398 flesh^H1320.

Jer 7:22

Jer 7:22“For I did not speak to your fathers or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Jer 7:23

Jer 7:23“But this is [fn]what I commanded them, saying, ‘Listen to My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in the entire way which I command you, that it may be well with you.’

Jer 7:24

Jer 7:24“Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart and [fn]went backward and not forward.

Jer 7:25

Jer 7:25“Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My slaves the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them.

Jer 7:26

Jer 7:26“Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did more evil than their fathers.

Jer 7:27

“You shall speak^H1696 all^H3605 these^H428 words^H1697 to them, but they will not listen^H8085 to you; and you shall call^H7121 to them, but they will not answer^H6030 you.

Jer 7:28

Jer 7:28“You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not listen to the voice of Yahweh their God or receive discipline; [fn]truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.

Jer 7:29

‘Cut^H1494 off^H1494 [fn]your hair^H5145 and cast^H7993 it away^H7993,

And lift^H5375 up^H5375 a funeral lamentation^H7015 on the bare^H8205 heights^H8205;

For Yahweh^H3068 has rejected^H3988 and abandoned^H5203

The generation^H1755 of His wrath^H5678.’

Jer 7:30

“For the sons^H1121 of Judah^H3063 have done^H6213 that which^H7451 is^H7451 evil^H7451 in My sight^H5869,” declares^H5002 Yahweh^H3068, “they have set^H7760 their detestable^H8251 things^H8251 in the house^H1004, which^H834 is called^H7121 by My name^H8034, to defile^H2930 it.

Jer 7:31

Jer 7:31“They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come upon My heart.

Jer 7:32

“Therefore^H3651, behold^H2009, days^H3117 are coming^H935,” declares^H5002 Yahweh^H3068, “when it will no^H3808 longer^H5750 be called^H559 Topheth^H8612 or the valley^H1516 of the son^H1121 of Hinnom^H2011, but the valley^H1516 of the Slaughter^H2028; for they will bury^H6912 in Topheth^H8612 [fn]because^H4480 there^H369 is^H369 no^H369 other place^H4725.

Jer 7:33

Jer 7:33“The dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away.

Jer 7:34

Jer 7:34“Then I will make to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land will become a waste place.
