Ishmael Strikes Down Gedaliah

Now it happened in the seventh^H7637 month^H2320, that Ishmael^H3458 the son^H1121 of Nethaniah^H5418, the son^H1121 of Elishama^H476, of the royal^H4410 seed^H2233 and one of the chief^H7227 officers^H7227 of the king^H4428, along with ten^H6235 men^H376, came^H935 to Mizpah^H4709 to Gedaliah^H1436 the son^H1121 of Ahikam^H296. And they were eating^H398 bread^H3899 together^H3162 there^H8033 in Mizpah^H4709.

Jer 41:2

Jer 41:2Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him arose and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and put to death the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

Jer 41:3

Jer 41:3Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

Jer 41:4

Now it happened^H1961 on the [fn]next^H8145 day^H3117 after putting^H4191 Gedaliah^H1436 to death^H4191, when no^H3808 one^H376 knew^H3045 about it,

Jer 41:5

Jer 41:5that eighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria with their beards shaved off and their clothes torn and [fn]their bodies gashed, having grain offerings and frankincense in their hands to bring to the house of Yahweh.

Jer 41:6

Jer 41:6Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went; and it happened that as he encountered them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!”

Jer 41:7

Jer 41:7But it happened that as soon as they came inside the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men that were with him slaughtered them and cast them into the cistern.

Jer 41:8

Jer 41:8But ten men who were found among them said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death; for we have stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the field.” So he refrained and did not put them to death along with their [fn]companions.

Jer 41:9

Now as for the cistern^H953 where^H834^H8033 Ishmael^H3458 had cast^H7993 all^H3605 the corpses^H6297 of the men^H376 whom^H834 he had struck^H5221 down^H5221 [fn]because^H3027 of Gedaliah^H1436, it was the one that King^H4428 Asa^H609 had made^H6213 on^H4480^H6440 account^H4480^H6440 of^H4480^H6440 Baasha^H1201, king^H4428 of Israel^H3478; Ishmael^H3458 the son^H1121 of Nethaniah^H5418 filled^H4390 it with the slain^H2491.

Jer 41:10

Jer 41:10Then Ishmael took captive all the remnant of the people who were in Mizpah, the king’s daughters and all the people who remained in Mizpah, over whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; thus Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and went to cross over to the sons of Ammon.

Johanan Rescues the People

Jer 41:11

But Johanan^H3076 the son^H1121 of Kareah^H7143 and all^H3605 the commanders^H8269 of the military^H2428 forces^H2428 that were with him heard^H8085 of all^H3605 the evil^H7451 that Ishmael^H3458 the son^H1121 of Nethaniah^H5418 had done^H6213.

Jer 41:12

Jer 41:12So they took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and they found him by the great [fn]pool that is in Gibeon.

Jer 41:13

Jer 41:13Now it happened as soon as all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the military forces that were with him, they were glad.

Jer 41:14

Jer 41:14So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and returned and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

Jer 41:15

Jer 41:15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon.

Jer 41:16

Jer 41:16Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the military forces that were with him took from Mizpah all the remnant of the people whom he had returned from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the mighty men who were men of war, the women, the little ones, and the eunuchs, whom he had returned from Gibeon.

Jer 41:17

Jer 41:17And they went and stayed in [fn]Geruth Chimham, which is beside Bethlehem, in order to proceed into Egypt

Jer 41:18

Jer 41:18because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
