The Walls of Jerusalem Torn Down

(2Ki 25:1–12; Jer 52:4–16 )

[fn]Now when^H834 Jerusalem^H3389 was captured^H3920 [fn]in the ninth^H8671 year^H8141 of Zedekiah^H6667 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, in the tenth^H6224 month^H2320, Nebuchadnezzar^H5019 king^H4428 of Babylon^H894 and all^H3605 his military^H2428 force^H2428 came^H935 to Jerusalem^H3389 and laid^H6696 siege^H6696 to it;

Jer 39:2

Jer 39:2in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the city was breached.

Jer 39:3

Jer 39:3Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came in and sat down at the Middle Gate: Nergal-sar-ezer, Samgar-nebu, Sar-sekim the [fn]Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the [fn]Rab-mag, and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon.

Jer 39:4

Jer 39:4Now it happened that when Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, they fled and went out of the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the gate between the two walls; and he went out toward the [fn]Arabah.

Jer 39:5

Jer 39:5But the military force of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the [fn]plains of Jericho; and they took him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he spoke judgment on him.

Jer 39:6

Jer 39:6Then the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes at Riblah; the king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah.

Jer 39:7

Jer 39:7He then blinded Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him in fetters of bronze to bring him to Babylon.

Jer 39:8

Jer 39:8The Chaldeans also burned with fire the house of the king and the houses of the people, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

Jer 39:9

Jer 39:9And as for the rest of the people who remained in the city, the [fn]defectors who had gone over to him and the rest of the people who remained, Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard took them away into exile in Babylon.

Jer 39:10

Jer 39:10But some of the poorest people who had nothing, Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had them remain in the land of Judah and gave them vineyards and fields [fn]at that time.

Jer 39:11

Now Nebuchadnezzar^H5019 king^H4428 of Babylon^H894 gave^H6680 a command^H6680 about^H5921 Jeremiah^H3414 through^H3027 Nebuzaradan^H5018 the captain^H7227 of the bodyguard^H2876, saying^H559,

Jer 39:12

Jer 39:12“Take him and set your eyes to look after him and do nothing harmful to him, but rather deal with him just as he speaks to you.”

Jer 39:13

Jer 39:13So Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard sent word, along with Nebushazban the [fn]Rab-saris and Nergal-sar-ezer the [fn]Rab-mag and all the leading officers of the king of Babylon;

Jer 39:14

Jer 39:14they even sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the guard and gave him over to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he stayed among the people.

Jer 39:15

Now the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068 had come^H1961 to Jeremiah^H3414 while he was confined^H6113 in the court^H2691 of the guard^H4307, saying^H559,

Jer 39:16

Jer 39:16“Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am about to bring My words on this city for [fn]calamity and not for [fn]prosperity; and they will take place before you on that day.

Jer 39:17

Jer 39:17“But I will deliver you on that day,” declares Yahweh, “and you will not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are terrified.

Jer 39:18

Jer 39:18“For I will certainly provide you escape, and you will not fall by the sword; but you will have your own life as spoil because you have trusted in Me,” declares Yahweh.’”
