Jeremiah Warns Against Trust in Pharaoh

(2Ki 24:17; 2Ch 36:10 )

Now Zedekiah^H6667 the son^H1121 of Josiah^H2977, whom^H834 Nebuchadnezzar^H5019 king^H4428 of Babylon^H894 had made^H4427 king^H4427 in the land^H776 of Judah^H3063, reigned^H4427 as king^H4428 in^H8478 place^H8478 of^H8478 Coniah^H3078 the son^H1121 of Jehoiakim^H3079.

Jer 37:2

Jer 37:2But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of Yahweh which He spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.

Jer 37:3

Yet King^H4428 Zedekiah^H6667 sent^H7971 Jehucal^H3081 the son^H1121 of Shelemiah^H8018 and Zephaniah^H6846 the son^H1121 of Maaseiah^H4641, the priest^H3548, to Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030, saying^H559, “Please^H4994 pray^H6419 to Yahweh^H3068 our God^H430 on our behalf^H1157.”

Jer 37:4

Jer 37:4Now Jeremiah was still coming in and going out among the people; they had not yet put him in the prison.

Jer 37:5

Jer 37:5Meanwhile, Pharaoh’s military force had come out from Egypt; and the Chaldeans who had been besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them. So they withdrew from Jerusalem.

Jer 37:6

Then the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068 came^H1961 to Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030, saying^H559,

Jer 37:7

Jer 37:7“Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you are to say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, the military force of Pharaoh which has come out for your assistance is going to return to its own land of Egypt.

Jer 37:8

Jer 37:8“The Chaldeans will also return and fight against this city, and they will capture it and burn it with fire.”’

Jer 37:9

Jer 37:9“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go.

Jer 37:10

Jer 37:10‘For even if you had struck down the entire military force of the Chaldeans who were fighting against you, and there were only wounded men remaining among them, each man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

Jeremiah Imprisoned

Jer 37:11

Now it happened^H1961 when the military^H2428 force^H2428 of the Chaldeans^H3778 had withdrawn^H5927 from Jerusalem^H3389 because^H4480^H6440 of the military^H2428 force^H2428 of Pharaoh^H6547,

Jer 37:12

Jer 37:12that Jeremiah went out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin in order to obtain his portion of some property there among the people.

Jer 37:13

Jer 37:13Now it happened that while he was at the Gate of Benjamin, the master of the guard whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah was there; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are [fn]going over to the Chaldeans!”

Jer 37:14

Jer 37:14But Jeremiah said, “A lie! I am not [fn]going over to the Chaldeans”; yet he would not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

Jer 37:15

Jer 37:15Then the officials were angry at Jeremiah and struck him, and they put him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe because they had made that house into the prison.

Jer 37:16

Jer 37:16For Jeremiah had come into the [fn]pit, that is, the vaulted cell; and Jeremiah stayed there many days.

Jer 37:17

Then King^H4428 Zedekiah^H6667 sent^H7971 and took^H3947 him out; and in his palace^H1004 the king^H4428 secretly^H5643 asked^H7592 him and said^H559, “Is^H3426 there^H3426 a word^H1697 from Yahweh^H3068?” And Jeremiah^H3414 said^H559, “There^H3426 is^H3426!” Then he said^H559, “You will be given^H5414 into the hand^H3027 of the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894!”

Jer 37:18

Jer 37:18Moreover, Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “In what way have I sinned against you or against your servants or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

Jer 37:19

Jer 37:19“Where then are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?

Jer 37:20

Jer 37:20“But now, please listen, O my lord the king; please let my supplication [fn]come before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, that I may not die there.”

Jer 37:21

Jer 37:21Then King Zedekiah gave commandment, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard and gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city had come to an end. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
