The Angel of Yahweh Speaks to Israel

Then the angel^H4397 of Yahweh^H3068 came^H5927 up^H5927 from Gilgal^H1537 to Bochim^H1066. And he said^H559, “I brought^H5927 you up^H5927 out of Egypt^H4714 and led^H935 you into the land^H776 which^H834 I have sworn^H7650 to your fathers^H1; and I said^H559, ‘I will never^H3808^H5769 break^H6565 My covenant^H1285 with you,

Jdg 2:2

Jdg 2:2and as for you, you shall cut no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not listened to My voice; what is this you have done?

Jdg 2:3

Jdg 2:3“Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they will [fn]become as thorns in your sides, and their gods will become a snare to you.’”

Jdg 2:4

Jdg 2:4So it happened that when the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.

Jdg 2:5

Jdg 2:5So they named that place [fn]Bochim; and there they sacrificed to Yahweh.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

Jdg 2:6

Then Joshua^H3091 sent^H7971 the people^H5971 away^H7971, and the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 went^H1980 each^H376 to his inheritance^H5159 to possess^H3423 the land^H776.

Jdg 2:7

Jdg 2:7And the people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who [fn]survived Joshua, who saw all the great work of Yahweh which He had done for Israel.

Jdg 2:8

Jdg 2:8Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died at the age of 110.

Jdg 2:9

Jdg 2:9And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Jdg 2:10

Jdg 2:10And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know Yahweh or even the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel Serves Baals

Jdg 2:11

Then the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213 what^H7451 was^H7451 evil^H7451 in the eyes^H5869 of Yahweh^H3068 and [fn]served^H5647 the Baals^H1168,

Jdg 2:12

Jdg 2:12and they forsook Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked Yahweh to anger.

Jdg 2:13

Jdg 2:13So they forsook Yahweh and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

Jdg 2:14

Jdg 2:14And the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

Jdg 2:15

Jdg 2:15Wherever they went, the hand of Yahweh was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken and as Yahweh had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

Yahweh Raises Up Judges

Jdg 2:16

Then Yahweh^H3068 raised^H6965 up^H6965 judges^H8199 [fn]who saved^H3467 them from the hands^H3027 of those who plundered^H8154 them.

Jdg 2:17

Jdg 2:17Yet they did not listen to their judges either, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of Yahweh; they did not do as their fathers.

Jdg 2:18

Jdg 2:18Now when Yahweh raised up judges for them, Yahweh was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for Yahweh was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and suppressed them.

Jdg 2:19

Jdg 2:19But it happened when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways.

Jdg 2:20

Jdg 2:20So the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has trespassed against My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice,

Jdg 2:21
