The Birth of Samson

(cf. Num 6:1–21 )

Then the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 again^H3254 did^H6213 what^H7451 was evil^H7451 in the eyes^H5869 of Yahweh^H3068, so that Yahweh^H3068 gave^H5414 them into the hand^H3027 of the Philistines^H6430 forty^H705 years^H8141.

Jdg 13:2

And there was a certain^H259 man^H376 of Zorah^H6881, of the family^H4940 of the Danites^H1839, whose name^H8034 was Manoah^H4495; and his wife^H802 was barren^H6135 and had borne^H3205 no^H3808 children.

Jdg 13:3

Jdg 13:3Then the angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you [fn]shall be with child and give birth to a son.

Jdg 13:4

Jdg 13:4“So now, be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing.

Jdg 13:5

Jdg 13:5“For behold, you [fn]shall be with child and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”

Jdg 13:6

Jdg 13:6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. And I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.

Jdg 13:7

Jdg 13:7“And he said to me, ‘Behold, you [fn]shall be with child and give birth to a son, so now you shall not drink wine or strong drink, and you shall not eat any unclean thing, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”

Jdg 13:8

Then Manoah^H4495 entreated^H6279 Yahweh^H3068 and said^H559, “O^H994 Lord^H136, please^H994^H4994 let the man^H376 of God^H430 whom^H834 You have sent^H7971 come^H935 to us again^H5750 that he may instruct^H3384 us what^H4100 to do^H6213 for the boy^H5288 who is to be born^H3205.”

Jdg 13:9

Jdg 13:9And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her.

Jdg 13:10

Jdg 13:10So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, and she said to him, “Behold, the man who came the other day to me has appeared to me.”

Jdg 13:11

Jdg 13:11Then Manoah arose and followed his wife, and when he came to the man he said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.”

Jdg 13:12

Jdg 13:12So Manoah said, “Now your words will come to pass. What shall be the judgment governing the boy and his work?”

Jdg 13:13

Jdg 13:13So the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “Let the woman be careful in all that I said.

Jdg 13:14

Jdg 13:14“She should not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; let her keep all that I commanded.”

Jdg 13:15

Then Manoah^H4495 said^H559 to the angel^H4397 of Yahweh^H3068, “Please^H4994 let us delay^H6113 you so that we may prepare^H6213 a young^H1423^H5795 goat^H1423^H5795 for you.”

Jdg 13:16

Jdg 13:16And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “Though you delay me, I will not eat your [fn]food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to Yahweh.” For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of Yahweh.

Jdg 13:17

Jdg 13:17Then Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, “What is your name, so that when your words come to pass, we may honor you?”

Jdg 13:18

Jdg 13:18But the angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is [fn]wonderful?”

Jdg 13:19

Jdg 13:19So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to Yahweh, and He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on.

Jdg 13:20

Jdg 13:20Indeed, it happened when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of Yahweh went up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife saw this, so they fell on their faces to the ground.

Jdg 13:21

Now the angel^H4397 of Yahweh^H3068 did not appear^H7200 to Manoah^H4495 or his wife^H802 again^H3254^H5750. Then^H227 Manoah^H4495 knew^H3045 that he was the angel^H4397 of Yahweh^H3068.

Jdg 13:22

Jdg 13:22So Manoah said to his wife, “We will surely die, for we have seen God.”

Jdg 13:23

Jdg 13:23But his wife said to him, “If Yahweh had desired to put us to death, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have let us hear things like this at this time.”

Jdg 13:24

Then the woman^H802 gave^H3205 birth^H3205 to a son^H1121 and named^H7121^H8034 him Samson^H8123; and the child^H5288 grew^H1431 up^H1431, and Yahweh^H3068 blessed^H1288 him.
