Jephthah Fights Ephraim

Then the men^H376 of Ephraim^H669 were summoned^H6817, and they crossed^H5674 [fn]to Zaphon^H6829 and said^H559 to Jephthah^H3316, “Why^H4069 did you cross^H5674 over^H5674 to fight^H3898 against the sons^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, but did not^H3808 call^H7121 us to go^H1980 with you? We will burn^H8313 your house^H1004 down on you.”

Jdg 12:2

Jdg 12:2Then Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were at great strife with the sons of Ammon. And I cried out to you, but you did not save me from their hand.

Jdg 12:3

Jdg 12:3“And I saw that you would not save me, so I [fn]took my life in my hands and crossed over against the sons of Ammon, and Yahweh gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?”

Jdg 12:4

Jdg 12:4Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim down because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, O Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasseh.”

Jdg 12:5

Jdg 12:5And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it happened when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead would say to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,”

Jdg 12:6

Jdg 12:6then they would say to him, “Say now, ‘Shibboleth.’” But he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not [fn]pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus there fell at that time 42,000 of Ephraim.

And Jephthah^H3316 judged^H8199 Israel^H3478 six^H8337 years^H8141. Then Jephthah^H3316 the Gileadite^H1569 died^H4191 and was buried^H6912 in one of the cities^H5892 of Gilead^H1568.

Jdg 12:9

Jdg 12:9And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he [fn]gave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirty daughters from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
