The Sin of Favoritism

My brothers^G80, do not hold^G2192 your faith^G4102 in our [fn]glorious^G1391 Lord^G2962 Jesus^G2424 Christ^G5547 with an attitude of personal^G4382 favoritism^G4382.

Jas 2:2

Jas 2:2For if a man comes into your [fn]assembly with a gold ring and dressed in bright clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes,

Jas 2:3

Jas 2:3and you [fn]pay special attention to the one who is wearing the bright clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”

Jas 2:4

Jas 2:4have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

Jas 2:5

Jas 2:5Listen, my beloved brothers: did not God choose the poor [fn]of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

Jas 2:6

Jas 2:6But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and they themselves drag you into [fn]court?

Jas 2:7

Jas 2:7Do they not blaspheme the good name [fn]by which you have been called?

Jas 2:8

If^G1487, however^G3305, you are fulfilling^G5055 the [fn]royal^G937 law^G3551 according^G2596 to the Scripture^G1124, “YOU SHALL LOVE^G25 YOUR NEIGHBOR^G4139 AS YOURSELF^G4572,” you are doing^G4160 well^G2573.

Jas 2:9

Jas 2:9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin, being convicted by the [fn]law as transgressors.

Jas 2:10

Jas 2:10For whoever keeps the whole [fn]law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

Jas 2:11

Jas 2:11For He who said, “DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,” also said, “DO NOT MURDER.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the [fn]law.

Jas 2:12

Jas 2:12So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom.

Jas 2:13

Jas 2:13For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy [fn]triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Works

Jas 2:14

What^G5101 use^G3786 is it, my brothers^G80, if^G1437 someone^G5100 says^G3004 he has^G2192 faith^G4102 but he has^G2192 no^G3361 works^G2041? Can^G1410 [fn]that faith^G4102 save^G4982 him?

Jas 2:15

Jas 2:15If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,

Jas 2:16

Jas 2:16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, [fn]be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

Jas 2:17

Jas 2:17Even so faith, if it has no works, is [fn]dead by itself.

Jas 2:18

But someone^G5100 will say^G3004, “You have^G2192 faith^G4102; and I have^G2192 works^G2041. Show^G1166 me your faith^G4102 without^G5565 the works^G2041, and I will show^G1166 you my faith^G4102 by my works^G2041.”

Jas 2:19

Jas 2:19You believe that [fn]God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

Jas 2:20

Jas 2:20But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?

Jas 2:21

Jas 2:21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

Jas 2:22

Jas 2:22You see that faith was working with his works, and [fn]as a result of the works, faith was [fn]perfected.

Jas 2:23

Jas 2:23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,” and he was called the friend of God.
