Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen

Then Joseph^H3130 went^H935 in^H935 and told^H5046 Pharaoh^H6547 and said^H559, “My father^H1 and my brothers^H251 and their flocks^H6629 and their herds^H1241 and all^H3605 that they have, have come^H935 out of the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667; and behold^H2009, they are in the land^H776 of Goshen^H1657.”

Gen 47:2

Gen 47:2And he took five men from among his brothers and set them before Pharaoh.

Gen 47:3

Gen 47:3Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.”

Gen 47:4

Gen 47:4And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is heavy in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants [fn]live in the land of Goshen.”

Gen 47:5

Gen 47:5Then Pharaoh said to [fn]Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.

Gen 47:6

Gen 47:6“The land of Egypt is [fn]at your disposal; have your father and your brothers settle in the best of the land, let them settle in the land of Goshen; and if you know any excellent men among them, then [fn]put them in charge of my livestock.”

Gen 47:7

Then Joseph^H3130 brought^H935 his father^H1 Jacob^H3290 and stood^H5975^H6440 him before Pharaoh^H6547; and Jacob^H3290 blessed^H1288 Pharaoh^H6547.

Gen 47:8

Gen 47:8And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many are the days of the years of your life?”

Gen 47:9

Gen 47:9So Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojourning are [fn]130; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not [fn]attained to the days of the years [fn]that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning.”

Gen 47:10

Gen 47:10And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

Gen 47:11

Gen 47:11So Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

Gen 47:12

Gen 47:12And Joseph provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with [fn]food, according to their little ones.

Joseph and the Famine

Gen 47:13

Now there^H369 was^H369 no^H369 [fn]food^H3899 in all^H3605 the land^H776 because^H3588 the famine^H7458 was very^H3966 heavy^H3515, so that the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714 and the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667 languished^H3856 because^H4480^H6440 of the famine^H7458.

Gen 47:14

Gen 47:14And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

Gen 47:15

Gen 47:15Then the money came to an end in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan. So all the Egyptians came to Joseph [fn]and said, “Give us [fn]food, for why should we die in your presence? For our money [fn]is gone.”

Gen 47:16

Gen 47:16Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money [fn]is gone.”

Gen 47:17

Gen 47:17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them [fn]food in exchange for the horses and the [fn]flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he [fn]fed them with [fn]food in exchange for all their livestock [fn]that year.

Gen 47:18

Gen 47:18Then that year came to an end. And they came to him the [fn]next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money has come to an end, and the [fn]livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left [fn]for my lord except our bodies and our land.

Gen 47:19

Gen 47:19“Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for [fn]food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”

Gen 47:20

So Joseph^H3130 bought^H7069 all^H3605 the land^H127 of Egypt^H4714 for Pharaoh^H6547, for [fn]every^H376 Egyptian^H4714 sold^H4376 his field^H7704 because^H3588 the famine^H7458 was severe^H2388 upon them. Thus the land^H776 became^H1961 Pharaoh’s^H6547.

Gen 47:21

Gen 47:21As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other end.

Gen 47:22

Gen 47:22Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they ate off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land.

Gen 47:23

Gen 47:23Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land.

Gen 47:24

Gen 47:24“And it will be, at the harvest you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and [fn]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”

Gen 47:25

Gen 47:25So they said, “You have kept us alive! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.”

Gen 47:26

Gen 47:26And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests [fn]did not become Pharaoh’s.

Gen 47:27

Now Israel^H3478 [fn]lived^H3427 in the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, [fn]in Goshen^H1657, and they took possession^H270 of property^H270 in it and were^H6509 fruitful^H6509 and became^H7235 very^H3966 numerous^H7235.

Gen 47:28

Gen 47:28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were 147 years.

Gen 47:29

Then the days^H3117 for Israel^H3478 to die^H4191 drew^H7126 near^H7126, and he called^H7121 his son^H1121 Joseph^H3130 and said^H559 to him, “Please^H4994, if^H518 I have found^H4672 favor^H2580 in your sight^H5869, place^H7760 now^H4994 your hand^H3027 under^H8478 my thigh^H3409 and deal^H6213 with me in lovingkindness^H2617 and truth^H571. Please^H4994 do not bury^H6912 me in Egypt^H4714.

Gen 47:30

Gen 47:30“But I will lie down with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.”
