Joseph Interprets the Officials’ Dreams

Now it happened^H1961 that after^H310 these^H428 things^H1697, the cupbearer^H4945 and the baker^H644 for the king^H4428 of Egypt^H4714 offended^H2398 their lord^H113, the king^H4428 of Egypt^H4714.

Gen 40:2

Gen 40:2And Pharaoh was furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

Gen 40:3

Gen 40:3So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.

Gen 40:4

Gen 40:4And the captain of the bodyguard appointed Joseph as overseer over them, and he [fn]attended to them; and they were in confinement for [fn]some time.

Gen 40:5

Gen 40:5Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in jail, both had a dream the same night, each man with his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation.

Gen 40:6

Gen 40:6Now Joseph came to them in the morning and saw them, and behold, they were dejected.

Gen 40:7

Gen 40:7So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, saying, “Why are your faces so sad today?”

Gen 40:8

Gen 40:8Then they said to him, “We have [fn]had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Recount it to me, please.”

Gen 40:9

So the chief^H8269 cupbearer^H4945 recounted^H5608 his dream^H2472 to Joseph^H3130 and said^H559 to him, “In my dream^H2472, [fn]behold^H2009, there was a vine^H1612 in front^H6440 of me;

Gen 40:10

Gen 40:10and on the vine were three branches. And as it was budding, its blossoms came out, and its clusters produced ripe grapes.

Gen 40:11

Gen 40:11“Now Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh’s [fn]hand.”

Gen 40:12

Gen 40:12Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;

Gen 40:13

Gen 40:13within three more days Pharaoh will [fn]lift up your head and restore you to your [fn]office; and you will put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer.

Gen 40:14

Gen 40:14“Only remember me when it goes well with you, and please show me lovingkindness by remembering me to Pharaoh and getting me out of this house.

Gen 40:15

Gen 40:15“For I was in fact stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should have put me into the pit.”

Gen 40:16

And the chief^H8269 baker^H644 saw^H7200 that he had interpreted^H6622 favorably^H2896, so he said^H559 to Joseph^H3130, “I also^H637 saw in my dream^H2472, and behold^H2009, there were three^H7969 baskets^H5536 of white^H2751 bread^H2751 on my head^H7218;

Gen 40:17

Gen 40:17and in the top basket there were some of all [fn]sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

Gen 40:18

Gen 40:18Then Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days;

Gen 40:19

Gen 40:19within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head off of you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh off of you.”

Gen 40:20

Thus it happened^H1961 on the third^H7992 day^H3117, which was Pharaoh’s^H6547 birthday^H3205^H3117, that he made^H6213 a feast^H4960 for all^H3605 his servants^H5650; and he lifted^H5375 up^H5375 the head^H7218 of the chief^H8269 cupbearer^H4945 and the head^H7218 of the chief^H8269 baker^H644 among^H8432 his servants^H5650.
