Joseph in Potiphar’s House

Now Joseph^H3130 was brought^H3381 down^H3381 to Egypt^H4714; and Potiphar^H6318, an Egyptian^H4713 official^H5631 of Pharaoh^H6547, the captain^H8269 of the bodyguard^H2876, bought^H7069 him [fn]from the Ishmaelites^H3459, who^H834 had brought^H3381 him down^H3381 there^H8033.

Gen 39:2

Gen 39:2And Yahweh was with Joseph, so he became a [fn]successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

Gen 39:3

Gen 39:3Now his master saw that Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh caused all that he did to succeed in his hand.

Gen 39:4

Gen 39:4So Joseph found favor in his sight and [fn]attended on him; and he appointed him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he gave in his hand.

Gen 39:5

Gen 39:5Now it happened that from the time he appointed him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

Gen 39:6

Gen 39:6So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s hand; and with him there he did not [fn]concern himself with anything except the [fn]food which he [fn]ate.

Now Joseph^H3130 was beautiful^H3303 in form^H8389 and beautiful^H3303 in appearance^H4758.

Gen 39:7

And it happened^H1961 after^H310 these^H428 events^H1697 that his master’s^H113 wife^H802 [fn]set^H5375 her eyes^H5869 on Joseph^H3130 and said^H559, “Lie^H7901 with me.”

Gen 39:8

Gen 39:8But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master [fn]does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has given all that he owns into my hand.

Gen 39:9

Gen 39:9“[fn]There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”

Gen 39:10

Gen 39:10So it happened that as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

Gen 39:11

Now it happened^H1961 [fn]one^H2088 day^H3117 that he went^H935 into the house^H1004 to do^H6213 his work^H4399, and none^H369^H376 of the men^H376 of the household^H1004 was there^H8033 inside^H1004.

Gen 39:12

Gen 39:12Then she seized him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled and went outside.

Gen 39:13

Gen 39:13Now it happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,

Gen 39:14

Gen 39:14that she called to the men of her household and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in a [fn]Hebrew to us to laugh at us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I [fn]screamed.

Gen 39:15

Gen 39:15“Now it happened that when he heard that I raised my voice and [fn]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.”

Gen 39:16

Gen 39:16And she placed his garment beside her until his master came home.

Gen 39:17

Gen 39:17Then she spoke to him [fn]with these words, saying, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to laugh at me;

Gen 39:18

Gen 39:18and as I raised my voice and [fn]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”

Joseph Is Put into Jail

Gen 39:19

Now it happened^H1961 that when his master^H113 heard^H8085 the words^H1697 of his wife^H802, which^H834 she spoke^H1696 to him, saying^H559, “[fn]This^H1697^H428 is what^H1697 your slave^H5650 did^H6213 to me,” his anger^H639 burned^H2734.

Gen 39:20

Gen 39:20So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.

Gen 39:21

Gen 39:21But Yahweh was with Joseph and [fn]extended lovingkindness to him and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.

Gen 39:22

Gen 39:22So the chief jailer gave into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was [fn]the one who did it.
