Jacob’s Fear of Esau

Now Jacob^H3290 went^H1980 on his way^H1870, and the angels^H4397 of God^H430 met^H6293 him.

Gen 32:2Then Jacob said when he saw them, “This is God’s [fn]camp.” So he named that place [fn]Mahanaim.

Then Jacob^H3290 sent^H7971 messengers^H4397 before^H6440 him to his brother^H251 Esau^H6215 in the land^H776 of Seir^H8165, the [fn]country^H7704 of Edom^H123.

Gen 32:4

Gen 32:4He also commanded them saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord, to Esau: ‘Thus says your servant Jacob, “I have sojourned with Laban and have been delayed until now;

Gen 32:5

Gen 32:5and I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female slaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.”’”

Gen 32:6

Then the messengers^H4397 returned^H7725 to Jacob^H3290, saying^H559, “We came^H935 to your brother^H251, to Esau^H6215, and furthermore^H1571 he is coming^H1980 to meet^H7122 you, and four^H702 hundred^H3967 men^H376 are with him.”

Gen 32:7

Gen 32:7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two camps.

Gen 32:8

Gen 32:8And he said, “If Esau comes to the one camp and strikes it, then the camp which remains will escape.”

Gen 32:9

And Jacob^H3290 said^H559, “O God^H430 of my father^H1 Abraham^H85 and God^H430 of my father^H1 Isaac^H3327, O Yahweh^H3068, who said^H559 to me, ‘Return^H7725 to your land^H776 and to your kin^H4138, and I will [fn]prosper^H3190 you,’

Gen 32:10

Gen 32:10 [fn]I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the truth which You have shown to Your slave; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

Gen 32:11

Gen 32:11“Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me down with the mothers and the children.

Gen 32:12

Gen 32:12“For You said, ‘I will surely [fn]prosper you and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.’”

Gen 32:13

So he spent^H3885 the night^H3915 there^H8033. Then he took^H3947 from what [fn]he had^H935 with him a present^H4503 for his brother^H251 Esau^H6215:

Gen 32:14

Gen 32:14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

Gen 32:15

Gen 32:15thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

Gen 32:16

Gen 32:16And he gave them into the hand of his servants, every flock by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on before me and put a space between flocks.”

Gen 32:17

Gen 32:17And he commanded the first one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?’

Gen 32:18

Gen 32:18then you shall say, ‘These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.’”

Gen 32:19

Gen 32:19Then he commanded also the second and the third and all those who followed the flocks, saying, “After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;

Gen 32:20

Gen 32:20and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease his face with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will lift up my face.”

Gen 32:21

Gen 32:21So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.

Gen 32:22

And he arose^H6965 that same^H1931 night^H3915 and took^H3947 his two^H8147 wives^H802 and his two^H8147 servant-women^H8198 and his eleven^H259^H6240 children^H3206 and crossed^H5674 the ford^H4569 of the Jabbok^H2999.

Gen 32:23

Gen 32:23And he took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.

Jacob Wrestles with God

Gen 32:24

Gen 32:24Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the [fn]breaking of dawn.

Gen 32:25

Gen 32:25And he saw that he had not prevailed against him, so he touched the socket of his thigh; and so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.

Gen 32:26

Gen 32:26Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is [fn]breaking.” But he said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

Gen 32:27

Gen 32:27So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”

Gen 32:28

Gen 32:28Then He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but [fn]Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.”

Gen 32:29

Gen 32:29Then Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.

Gen 32:30

Gen 32:30So Jacob named the place [fn]Peniel, for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my [fn]life has been delivered.”

Gen 32:31

Gen 32:31And the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.

Gen 32:32

Gen 32:32Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh because he touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
