The Sons of Jacob

Then Rachel^H7354 saw^H7200 that she bore^H3205 Jacob^H3290 no^H3808 children, so [fn]she became^H7065 jealous^H7065 of her sister^H269; and she said^H559 to Jacob^H3290, “Give^H3051 me children^H1121, or else^H518^H369 I die^H4191.”

Gen 30:2

Gen 30:2Then Jacob’s anger burned against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

Gen 30:3

Gen 30:3And she said, “Here is my maidservant Bilhah, go in to her that she may bear on my knees, that [fn]through her I too may obtain children.”

Gen 30:4

Gen 30:4So she gave him her servant-woman Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.

Gen 30:5

Gen 30:5And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.

Gen 30:6

Gen 30:6Then Rachel said, “God has [fn]rendered justice to me and has indeed listened to my voice and has given me a son.” Therefore she named him [fn]Dan.

Gen 30:7

Gen 30:7And Rachel’s servant-woman Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

Gen 30:8

Gen 30:8So Rachel said, “With [fn]mighty wrestlings I have [fn]wrestled with my sister, and I have indeed prevailed.” And she named him Naphtali.

Gen 30:9

Then Leah^H3812 saw^H7200 that she had stopped^H5975 bearing^H3205, so she took^H3947 her servant-woman^H8198 Zilpah^H2153 and gave^H5414 her to Jacob^H3290 as a wife^H802.

Gen 30:10

Gen 30:10And Leah’s servant-woman Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

Gen 30:11

Gen 30:11Then Leah said, “[fn]How fortunate!” So she named him [fn]Gad.

Gen 30:12

Gen 30:12And Leah’s servant-woman Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

Gen 30:13

Gen 30:13Then Leah said, “[fn]Happy am I! For women will call me happy.” So she named him [fn]Asher.

Gen 30:14

And in the days^H3117 of the wheat^H2406 harvest^H7105, Reuben^H7205 went^H1980 and found^H4672 mandrakes^H1736 in the field^H7704 and brought^H935 them to his mother^H517 Leah^H3812. Then Rachel^H7354 said^H559 to Leah^H3812, “Please^H4994 give^H5414 me some^H4480 of your son’s^H1121 mandrakes^H1736.”

Gen 30:15

Gen 30:15But she said to her, “Is it a small matter for you to take my husband? And would you take my son’s mandrakes also?” So Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”

Gen 30:16

Gen 30:16Then Jacob came in from the field in the evening. And Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night.

Gen 30:17

Gen 30:17And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.

Gen 30:18

Gen 30:18And Leah said, “God has given me my [fn]wages because I gave my servant-woman to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.

Gen 30:19

Gen 30:19Then Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob.

Gen 30:20

Gen 30:20And Leah said, “God has gifted me a good gift; this time my husband [fn]will honor me because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.

Gen 30:21

Gen 30:21Afterward she bore a daughter and named her Dinah.

Gen 30:22

Then God^H430 remembered^H2142 Rachel^H7354, and God^H430 listened^H8085 to her and opened^H6605 her womb^H7358.

Gen 30:23

Gen 30:23So she conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away my reproach.”

Gen 30:24

Gen 30:24And she named him Joseph, saying, “May Yahweh [fn]give me another son.”

Jacob Names His Wages

Gen 30:25

Now it happened^H1961 when^H834 Rachel^H7354 had borne^H3205 Joseph^H3130, that Jacob^H3290 said^H559 to Laban^H3837, “Send^H7971 me away^H7971, that I may go^H1980 to my own place^H4725 and to my own land^H776.

Gen 30:26

Gen 30:26“Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you yourself know my service which I have [fn]rendered you.”

Gen 30:27

Gen 30:27But Laban said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, stay with me; I have interpreted an omen that Yahweh has blessed me on your account.”

Gen 30:28

Gen 30:28And he continued to say, “Name me your wages, and I will give it.”

Gen 30:29

Gen 30:29But he said to him, “You yourself know how I have served you and how your livestock have [fn]fared with me.

Gen 30:30

Gen 30:30“For you had little before [fn]I came, but it has spread out to a multitude, and Yahweh has blessed you [fn]at every step of mine. But now, when shall I provide for my own household also?”

Gen 30:31

Gen 30:31So he said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this one thing for me, I will again pasture and keep your flock:

Gen 30:32

Gen 30:32let me pass through your entire flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted sheep and every black [fn]one among the lambs and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and such shall be my wages.

Gen 30:33

Gen 30:33“So my righteousness will answer for me later, when you come concerning my [fn]wages. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, will be considered stolen.”

Gen 30:34

Gen 30:34And Laban said, “Behold, [fn]let it be according to your word.”

Gen 30:35

Gen 30:35So he removed on that day the striped and spotted male goats and all the speckled and spotted female goats, every one with white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the [fn]care of his sons.

Gen 30:36

Gen 30:36And he put a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob was pasturing the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Gen 30:37

Then Jacob^H3290 [fn]took^H3947 fresh^H3892 rods^H4731 of poplar^H3839 and almond^H3869 and plane^H6196 trees^H6196, and he peeled^H6478 white^H3836 stripes^H6479 in them, exposing^H4286 the white^H3836 which^H834 was [fn]in the rods^H4731.

Gen 30:38

Gen 30:38And he set the rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the trough, that is, in the watering channels, where the flocks came to drink; and they [fn]mated when they came to drink.

Gen 30:39

Gen 30:39So the flocks [fn]mated by the rods, and the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted.

Gen 30:40

Gen 30:40And Jacob separated the lambs, and he [fn]made the flocks face toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban; and he set his own herds apart and did not set them with Laban’s flock.

Gen 30:41

Gen 30:41Now it would be that, whenever the [fn]stronger of the flock [fn]were mating, Jacob would place the rods in the sight of the flock in the trough, so that they might [fn]mate by the rods;
