Circumcision, the Sign of the Covenant

(Exo 12:43—13:2 )

Now it happened that when Abram^H87 was ninety-nine^H8673^H8672 years^H8141 old^H1121, Yahweh^H3068 appeared^H7200 to Abram^H87 and said^H559 to him,

“I am [fn]God^H410 Almighty^H7706;

Walk^H1980 before^H6440 Me and be [fn]blameless^H8549,

Gen 17:2

so that I may [fn]confirm^H5414 My covenant^H1285 between^H996 Me and you,

And that I may multiply^H7235 you exceedingly^H3966.”

Gen 17:3

Then Abram^H87 fell^H5307 on his face^H6440, and God^H430 spoke^H1696 with him, saying^H559,

Gen 17:4

“As for Me, behold^H2009, My covenant^H1285 is with you,

And you will be the father^H1 of a multitude^H1995 of nations^H1471.

Gen 17:5

“And no^H3808 longer^H5750 shall your name^H8034 be called^H7121 [fn]Abram^H87,

But your name^H8034 shall be [fn]Abraham^H85;

For I have made^H5414 you the father^H1 of a multitude^H1995 of nations^H1471.

Gen 17:6

“And I will make^H6509 you exceedingly^H3966 fruitful^H6509, and I will make^H5414 nations^H1471 of you, and kings^H4428 will go^H3318 forth^H3318 from you.

Gen 17:7

Gen 17:7“And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your seed after you.

Gen 17:8

Gen 17:8“And I will give to you and to your seed after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

Gen 17:9

God^H430 said^H559 further to Abraham^H85, “Now as for you, you shall keep^H8104 My covenant^H1285, you and your seed^H2233 after^H310 you throughout their generations^H1755.

Gen 17:10

Gen 17:10“This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your seed after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.

Gen 17:11

Gen 17:11“And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.

Gen 17:12

Gen 17:12“And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, one who is born in the house or one who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your seed.

Gen 17:13

Gen 17:13“A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

Gen 17:14

Gen 17:14“But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

Sarah Will Bear Isaac

Gen 17:15

Then God^H430 said^H559 to Abraham^H85, “As for Sarai^H8297 your wife^H802, you shall not call^H7121 her name^H8034 Sarai^H8297, but [fn]Sarah^H8283 shall be her name^H8034.

Gen 17:16

Gen 17:16“And I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will [fn]come from her.”

Gen 17:17

Gen 17:17Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, “Will a son be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a son?”

Gen 17:18

Gen 17:18And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!”

Gen 17:19

Gen 17:19But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name [fn]Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.

Gen 17:20

Gen 17:20“As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall [fn]become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

Gen 17:21

Gen 17:21“But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”

Gen 17:22

Gen 17:22So He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

Gen 17:23

Then Abraham^H85 took^H3947 Ishmael^H3458 his son^H1121, and all^H3605 who were born^H3211 in his house^H1004 and all^H3605 who were bought^H4736 with his money^H3701, every^H3605 male^H2145 among the men^H376 of Abraham’s^H85 household^H1004, and circumcised^H4135 the flesh^H1320 of their foreskin^H6190 in the very^H6106 same^H6106 day^H3117, as God^H430 had spoken^H1696 with him.
