Sarai and Hagar

Now Sarai^H8297, Abram’s^H87 wife^H802, had borne^H3205 him no^H3808 children, and she had an Egyptian^H4713 servant-woman^H8198 whose name^H8034 was Hagar^H1904.

Gen 16:2

Gen 16:2So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, Yahweh has shut my womb from bearing children. Please go in to my servant-woman; perhaps I will [fn]obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

Gen 16:3

Gen 16:3And after Abram had [fn]lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant-woman, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.

Gen 16:4

Gen 16:4So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. Then she saw that she had conceived, so her mistress became [fn]contemptible in her sight.

Gen 16:5

Gen 16:5And Sarai said to Abram, “May the violence done to me be upon you. I gave my servant-woman into your [fn]embrace, but she saw that she had conceived, so I became [fn]contemptible in her [fn]sight. May Yahweh judge between [fn]you and me.”

Gen 16:6

Gen 16:6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant-woman is in your [fn]hand; do to her what is good in your [fn]sight.” So Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her presence.

Gen 16:7

Now the angel^H4397 of Yahweh^H3068 found^H4672 her by a spring^H5869 of water^H4325 in the wilderness^H4057, by the spring^H5869 on the way^H1870 to Shur^H7793.

Gen 16:8

Gen 16:8And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant-woman, where have you come from and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

Gen 16:9

Gen 16:9Then the angel of Yahweh said to her, “Return to your mistress and [fn]humble yourself under her hands.”

Gen 16:10

Gen 16:10Moreover, the angel of Yahweh said to her, “I will greatly multiply your seed so that [fn]they will be too many to be counted.”

Gen 16:11

Gen 16:11And the angel of Yahweh said to her further,

“Behold^H2009, you [fn]are with child^H2030,

And you will bear^H3205 a son^H1121;

And you shall call^H7121 his name^H8034 [fn]Ishmael^H3458,

Because^H3588 Yahweh^H3068 has heard^H8085 your affliction^H6040.

Gen 16:12

“And he will be a wild^H6501 donkey^H6501 of a man^H120,

His hand^H3027 will be against everyone^H3605,

And everyone’s^H3605 hand^H3027 will be against him;

And he will dwell^H7931 [fn]in^H5921^H6440 the^H5921^H6440 face^H5921^H6440 of all^H3605 his brothers^H251.”

Gen 16:13

Then she called^H7121 the name^H8034 of Yahweh^H3068 who spoke^H1696 to her, “[fn]You are [fn]a God^H410 who^H7210 sees^H7200”; for she said^H559, “Have I even^H1571 [fn]remained^H7200 alive^H7200 here^H1988 after^H310 seeing^H7210 Him?”

Gen 16:14

Gen 16:14Therefore the well was called [fn]Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Gen 16:15

So Hagar^H1904 bore^H3205 Abram^H87 a son^H1121; and Abram^H87 called^H7121 the name^H8034 of his son^H1121, whom^H834 Hagar^H1904 bore^H3205, Ishmael^H3458.
