Galatians 4 :: Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)

Sonship in Christ

Gal 4:1

Now I say, as long as the heir is a [fn]child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is [fn]owner of everything,

Gal 4:2but he is under guardians and stewards until the date set by the father.
Gal 4:3So also we, while we were children, were enslaved under the [fn]elemental things of the world.
Gal 4:4But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under [fn]the Law,
Gal 4:5so that He might redeem those who were under [fn]the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Gal 4:6And because you are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Gal 4:7Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir [fn]through God.
Gal 4:8

However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.

Gal 4:9But now, having known God, or rather having been known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless [fn]elemental things, to which you want to be enslaved all over again?
Gal 4:10You observe days and months and seasons and years.
Gal 4:11I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored [fn]over you for nothing.
Gal 4:12

I beg of you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong.

Gal 4:13But you know that it was because of a [fn]bodily illness that I proclaimed the gospel to you the [fn]first time;
Gal 4:14and that which was a [fn]trial to you in my [fn]bodily condition you did not despise or [fn]loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself.
Gal 4:15Where then is [fn]that sense of blessing you had? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
Gal 4:16So have I become your enemy by [fn]telling you the truth?
Gal 4:17They zealously seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will zealously seek them.
Gal 4:18But it is good always to be zealously sought in a commendable [fn]manner, and not only when I am present with you.
Gal 4:19My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you—
Gal 4:20but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, because I am perplexed about you.

An Allegory of Two Covenants

Gal 4:21

Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the Law?

Gal 4:22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant-woman and one by the free woman.
Gal 4:23But the son by the servant-woman had been born according to the flesh, while the son by the free woman through the promise.
Gal 4:24[fn]This is [fn]spoken with allegory, for these women are two covenants: one from Mount Sinai bearing children into slavery; [fn]she is Hagar.
Gal 4:25Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.
Gal 4:26But the Jerusalem above is free; [fn]she is our mother.
Gal 4:27For it is written,

“REJOICE, BARREN WOMAN WHO DOES NOT GIVE BIRTH;

BREAK FORTH AND SHOUT, YOU WHO ARE NOT IN LABOR;

FOR MORE NUMEROUS ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE ONE

THAN OF THE ONE WHO HAS A HUSBAND.”

Gal 4:28

And you brothers, in accordance with Isaac, are children of promise.

Gal 4:29But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh was persecuting him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also.
Gal 4:30But what does the Scripture say?

“CAST OUT THE SERVANT-WOMAN AND HER SON,

FOR THE SON OF THE SERVANT-WOMAN SHALL NOT BE AN HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREE WOMAN.”

Gal 4:31

So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant-woman, [fn]but of the free woman.
