Egypt Will Be Brought Down to Sheol

(cf. Eze 17:22–24 )

Now it happened in the eleventh^H259^H6240 year^H8141, in the third^H7992 month, on the first^H259 of the month^H2320, that the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068 came^H1961 to me saying^H559,

Eze 31:2

Eze 31:2“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude,

‘To whom^H413^H4310 do you liken^H1819 yourself in your greatness^H1433?

Eze 31:3

‘Behold^H2009, Assyria^H804 was a cedar^H730 in Lebanon^H3844

With beautiful^H3303 branches^H6057 and forest^H2793 shade^H6751

And lofty^H1364 in height^H6967,

And its top^H6788 was among^H996 the [fn]clouds^H5645.

Eze 31:4

‘The waters^H4325 made it grow^H1431; the [fn]deep^H8415 made^H7311 it high^H7311.

With its rivers^H5104 it was going^H1980 all^H5439 around^H5439 its planting^H4302 place^H4302

And sent^H7971 out^H7971 its conduits^H8585 to all^H3605 the trees^H6086 of the field^H7704.

Eze 31:5

‘Therefore^H5921^H3651 its height^H6967 was^H1361 loftier^H1361 than^H4480 all^H3605 the trees^H6086 of the field^H7704,

And its boughs^H5634 became^H7235 many^H7235 and its branches^H6288 long^H748

Because^H4480 of many^H7227 waters^H4325 [fn]as it spread^H7971 them out^H7971.

Eze 31:6

‘All^H3605 the birds^H5775 of the sky^H8064 nested^H7077 in its boughs^H5589,

And under^H8478 its branches^H6288 all^H3605 the beasts^H2416 of the field^H7704 gave^H3205 birth^H3205,

And all^H3605 great^H7227 nations^H1471 lived^H3427 under its shade^H6738.

Eze 31:7

‘So it was^H3302 beautiful^H3302 in its greatness^H1433, in the length^H753 of its foliage^H1808;

For its [fn]roots^H8328 extended^H1961 to many^H7227 waters^H4325.

Eze 31:8

‘The cedars^H730 in God’s^H430 garden^H1588 [fn]could not match^H6004 it;

The [fn]cypresses^H1265 [fn]could not liken^H1819 themselves with its boughs^H5589,

And the plane^H6196 trees^H6196 were not like its branches^H6288.

No^H3605^H3808 tree^H6086 in God’s^H430 garden^H1588 [fn]could liken^H1819 itself with it in its beauty^H3308.

Eze 31:9

‘I made^H6213 it beautiful^H3303 with the multitude^H7230 of its foliage^H1808,

And all^H3605 the trees^H6086 of Eden^H5731, which^H834 were in the garden^H1588 of God^H430, were^H7065 jealous^H7065 of it.

Eze 31:10

‘Therefore^H3651 thus^H3541 says^H559 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068, “Because^H3282^H834 [fn]it is^H1361 lofty^H1361 in height^H6967 and has put^H5414 its top^H6788 among^H996 the [fn]clouds^H5645, and its heart^H3824 is^H7311 high^H7311 up^H7311 in its loftiness^H1363,

Eze 31:11

Eze 31:11therefore I will give it into the hand of a [fn]dominant one of the nations; he will thoroughly deal with it. According to its wickedness I have driven it away.

Eze 31:12

Eze 31:12“Strangers—ruthless ones of the nations have cut it down and abandoned it; on the mountains and in all the valleys its foliage have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all the ravines of the land. And all the peoples of the earth have gone down from its shade and abandoned it.

Eze 31:13

Eze 31:13“On its downfall all the birds of the sky will dwell, and all the beasts of the field will be on its fallen branches

Eze 31:14

Eze 31:14so that all the trees by the waters may not be lofty in their height, nor put their top among the [fn]clouds, nor their dominant ones—all the [fn]well-watered ones—stand in their loftiness. For they have all been given over to death, to the earth beneath, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit.”

Eze 31:15

‘Thus^H3541 says^H559 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068, “On the day^H3117 when it went^H3381 down^H3381 to Sheol^H7585 I caused^H56 mourning^H56; I covered^H3680 it with the [fn]deep^H8415 over^H5921 it and held^H4513 back^H4513 its rivers^H5104. And its many^H7227 waters^H4325 were stopped^H3607 up^H3607, and I made Lebanon^H3844 [fn]mourn^H6937 for it, and all^H3605 the trees^H6086 of the field^H7704 wilted^H5968 away^H5968 on^H5921 account^H5921 of^H5921 it.

Eze 31:16

Eze 31:16“I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall when I made it go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the [fn]well-watered ones, were comforted in the earth beneath.

Eze 31:17

Eze 31:17“They also went down with it to Sheol to those who were slain by the sword; and those who were its [fn]strength lived under its shade among the nations.

Eze 31:18

“To which^H4310 among the trees^H6086 of Eden^H5731 do you thus^H3602 liken^H1819 yourself in glory^H3519 and greatness^H1433? Yet you will be brought^H3381 down^H3381 with the trees^H6086 of Eden^H5731 to the earth^H776 beneath^H8482; you will lie^H7901 in the midst^H8432 of the uncircumcised^H6189, with those who were slain^H2491 by the sword^H2719. So is Pharaoh^H6547 and all^H3605 his multitude^H1995!”’ declares^H5002 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068.”
