Jerusalem Plays the Harlot

Then the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068 came^H1961 to me, saying^H559,

Eze 16:2“Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations

Eze 16:3and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem, “Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

Eze 16:4

Eze 16:4“As for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths.

Eze 16:5

Eze 16:5“No eye had pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the [fn]open field, for your soul was abhorred on the day you were born.

Eze 16:6

“Then I passed^H5674 by you and saw^H7200 you squirming^H947 in your blood^H1818. So I said^H559 to you while you were in your blood^H1818, ‘Live^H2421!’ Indeed I said^H559 to you while you were in your blood^H1818, ‘Live^H2421!’

Eze 16:7

Eze 16:7“I made you [fn]numerous like plants of the field. Then you grew up, became tall, and came into the age for fine ornaments; your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown. Yet you were naked and bare.

Eze 16:8

“Then I passed^H5674 by you and saw^H7200 you, and behold^H2009, [fn]you were at the time^H6256 for love^H1730; so I spread^H6566 My skirt^H3671 over^H5921 you and covered^H3680 your nakedness^H6172. I also swore^H7650 to you and entered^H935 into a covenant^H1285 with you so that you became^H1961 Mine,” declares^H5002 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068.

Eze 16:9

Eze 16:9“Then I washed you with water, rinsed your blood off from you, and anointed you with oil.

Eze 16:10

Eze 16:10“I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk.

Eze 16:11

Eze 16:11“I also adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.

Eze 16:12

Eze 16:12“I also put a ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a splendid crown on your head.

Eze 16:13

Eze 16:13“Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty.

Eze 16:14

Eze 16:14“Then your name went forth among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect because of My majesty which I set on you,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Eze 16:15

“But you trusted^H982 in your beauty^H3308 and played^H2181 the^H2181 harlot^H2181 because^H5921 of your name^H8034, and you poured^H8210 out^H8210 your harlotries^H8457 on every^H3605 passer-by^H5674 [fn]who might be willing.

Eze 16:16

Eze 16:16“You took some of your clothes, made for yourself high places of various colors, and played the harlot on them, [fn]which should never come about nor happen.

Eze 16:17

Eze 16:17“You also took your splendid [fn]jewelry made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images that you might play the harlot with them.

Eze 16:18

Eze 16:18“Then you took your embroidered cloth and covered them and gave My oil and My incense before them.

Eze 16:19

Eze 16:19“Also My bread which I gave you, fine flour, oil, and honey with which I had you eat, you gave before them for a soothing aroma; so it happened,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Eze 16:20

Eze 16:20“Moreover, you took your sons and daughters, whom you had borne to Me, and sacrificed them to [fn]idols to be devoured. Were your harlotries so small a matter?

Eze 16:21

Eze 16:21“You slaughtered My children and gave them up to [fn]idols by causing them to pass through the fire.

Eze 16:22

Eze 16:22“Besides all your abominations and harlotries you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare—you were squirming in your blood!

Eze 16:23

“Now it happened^H1961 after^H310 all^H3605 your evil^H7451-‘Woe^H188, woe^H188 to you!’ declares^H5002 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068—

Eze 16:24

Eze 16:24that you built yourself a shrine and made yourself a high place in every square.

Eze 16:25

Eze 16:25“You built yourself a high place at the head of every street and made your beauty abominable, and you spread your legs to every passer-by to multiply your harlotry.

Eze 16:26

Eze 16:26“You also played the harlot with the Egyptians, your [fn]lustful neighbors, and you multiplied your harlotry to provoke Me to anger.

Eze 16:27

Eze 16:27“Behold now, I have stretched out My hand against you and cut off your rations. And I gave you up to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd way.

Eze 16:28

Eze 16:28“Moreover, you played the harlot with the Assyrians because you were not satisfied; you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied.

Eze 16:29

Eze 16:29“You also multiplied your harlotry with the land of merchants, Chaldea, yet even with this you were not satisfied.”’”

Eze 16:30

“How^H4100 languishing^H535 is your heart^H3826,” declares^H5002 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068, “while you do^H6213 all^H3605 these^H428 things^H4639, the actions^H4639 of a [fn]bold-faced^H7989 harlot^H2181.

Eze 16:31

Eze 16:31“When you built your shrine at the head of every way and made your high place in every square, in disdaining your earnings, you were not like a harlot.

Eze 16:32

Eze 16:32“You adulteress wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!

Eze 16:33

Eze 16:33“[fn]Men give gifts to all harlots, but you give your gifts to all your lovers to bribe them to come to you from all around for your harlotries.

Eze 16:34

Eze 16:34“Thus you are the opposite of those women in your harlotries, in that no one plays the harlot [fn]as you do, because you give away your earnings and no earnings are given to you; thus you are the opposite.”

Eze 16:35

Therefore^H3651, O harlot^H2181, hear^H8085 the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068.

Eze 16:36

Eze 16:36Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your sons which you gave to [fn]idols,

Eze 16:37

Eze 16:37therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you loved and all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you from all around and uncover your nakedness to them that they may see all your nakedness.

Eze 16:38

Eze 16:38“Thus I will judge you like women who commit adultery or shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of wrath and jealousy.

Eze 16:39

Eze 16:39“I will also give you into [fn]the hands of your lovers, and they will pull down your shrines, tear down your high places, strip you of your clothing, take away your [fn]splendid jewelry, and will leave you naked and bare.

Eze 16:40

Eze 16:40“They will bring up an assembly against you, and they will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords.

Eze 16:41

Eze 16:41“They will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. Then I will make you cease from playing the harlot, and you will also no longer give [fn]your earnings to your lovers.

Eze 16:42

Eze 16:42“So I will [fn]cause My wrath against you to be at rest, and My jealousy will depart from you, and I will be quiet, and I will not be provoked anymore.

Eze 16:43

Eze 16:43“Because you have not remembered the days of your youth but [fn]have enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your way down on your own head,” declares Lord Yahweh, “so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations.

Eze 16:44

“Behold^H2009, everyone^H3605 who quotes^H4911 proverbs^H4911 will quote^H4911 this proverb^H4911 concerning^H5921 you, saying^H559, ‘[fn]Like mother^H517, [fn]like daughter^H1323.’

Eze 16:45

Eze 16:45“You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and children. You are also the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

Eze 16:46

Eze 16:46“Now your older sister is Samaria, who lives [fn]north of you with her [fn]daughters; and your younger sister, who lives [fn]south of you, is Sodom with her daughters.

Eze 16:47

Eze 16:47“Yet you have not merely walked in their ways or done according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you acted more corruptly in all your ways than they.

Eze 16:48

Eze 16:48“As I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “Sodom your sister and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done.

Eze 16:49

Eze 16:49“Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had lofty pride, abundant food, and quiet ease, but she did not strengthen the hand of the afflicted and needy.

Eze 16:50

Eze 16:50“Then they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. So I removed them [fn]when I saw it.

Eze 16:51

Eze 16:51“Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half of your sins, for you have multiplied your abominations more than they. Thus you have made your sisters appear righteous by all your abominations which you have done.

Eze 16:52

Eze 16:52“Also bear your dishonor in that you have [fn]made judgment favorable for your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. Yes, be also ashamed and bear your dishonor, in that you made your sisters appear righteous.

Eze 16:53

“Nevertheless, I will [fn]return^H7725 their captivity^H7622, the captivity^H7622 of Sodom^H5467 and her daughters^H1323, the captivity^H7622 of Samaria^H8111 and her daughters^H1323, and [fn]along^H8432 with them [fn]your own^H7622 captivity^H7622,

Eze 16:54

Eze 16:54in order that you may bear your dishonor and feel dishonor for all that you have done when you become a comfort to them.

Eze 16:55

Eze 16:55“Your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, [fn]will return to their former state, and you with your daughters will also return to your former state.

Eze 16:56

Eze 16:56“As the name of your sister Sodom was not heard in your mouth in your day of lofty pride,

Eze 16:57

Eze 16:57before your wickedness was uncovered, [fn]so now you have become the reproach of the daughters of [fn]Edom and of all who are around her, of the daughters of the Philistines—those all around you who despise you.

Eze 16:58

Eze 16:58“You have borne the penalty of your lewdness and abominations,” declares Yahweh.

Eze 16:59

Eze 16:59For thus says Lord Yahweh, “I will also do with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

Yahweh’s Everlasting Covenant

Eze 16:60

“Nevertheless, I Myself will remember^H2142 My covenant^H1285 with you in the days^H3117 of your youth^H5271, and I will establish^H6965 an everlasting^H5769 covenant^H1285 with you.

Eze 16:61

Eze 16:61“Then you will remember your ways and feel dishonor when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant.

Eze 16:62

Eze 16:62“Thus I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall know that I am Yahweh,

Eze 16:63

Eze 16:63so that you may remember and be ashamed and never open your mouth anymore because of your dishonor, when I have atoned for you for all that you have done,” declares Lord Yahweh.
