Idolatrous Elders Punished

Then some^H376 elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478 came^H935 to me and sat^H3427 down^H3427 before^H6440 me.

Eze 14:2And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

Eze 14:3“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be inquired by them at all?

Eze 14:4

Eze 14:4“Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Any man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I Yahweh will be brought to give him an answer [fn]in light of it, [fn]in light of the multitude of his idols,

Eze 14:5

Eze 14:5in order to seize the house of Israel by their heart, those who are [fn]estranged from Me through all their idols.”’

Eze 14:6

“Therefore^H3651 say^H559 to the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, ‘Thus^H3541 says^H559 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068, “[fn]Turn^H7725 back^H7725 and turn^H7725 away^H7725 from your idols^H1544 and turn^H7725 your faces^H6440 away^H7725 from all^H3605 your abominations^H8441.

Eze 14:7

Eze 14:7“For anyone of the house of Israel or of the sojourners who sojourn in Israel who separates himself from Me, sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me for himself, I, Yahweh, will be brought to answer him in My own person.

Eze 14:8

Eze 14:8“I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and [fn]a proverb, and I will cut him off from among My people. So you will know that I am Yahweh.

Eze 14:9

“But if^H3588 the prophet^H5030 is enticed^H6601 to speak^H1696 a word^H1697, it is I, Yahweh^H3068, who have enticed^H6601 that prophet^H5030, and I will stretch^H5186 out^H5186 My hand^H3027 against^H5921 him and destroy^H8045 him from among^H8432 My people^H5971 Israel^H3478.

Eze 14:10

Eze 14:10“They will bear the punishment of their iniquity; as the iniquity of the inquirer is, so the iniquity of the prophet will be,

Eze 14:11

Eze 14:11in order that the house of Israel may no longer wander from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions. Thus they will be My people, and I shall be their God,”’ declares Lord Yahweh.”

Calamitous Judgments of Jerusalem

Eze 14:12

Then the word^H1697 of Yahweh^H3068 came^H1961 to me saying^H559,

Eze 14:13

Eze 14:13“Son of man, if a country sins against Me by committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, break its staff of bread, send famine against it, and cut off from it both man and beast,

Eze 14:14

Eze 14:14even though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver themselves,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Eze 14:15

Eze 14:15“If I were to cause wild beasts to pass through the land and they bereaved it of children and it became desolate so that no one would pass through it because of the beasts,

Eze 14:16

Eze 14:16though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the country would become desolate.

Eze 14:17

Eze 14:17“Or if I should bring a sword on that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass through the country and cut off man and beast from it,’

Eze 14:18

Eze 14:18even though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters, but they alone would be delivered.

Eze 14:19

Eze 14:19“Or if I should send a plague against that country and pour out My wrath in blood on it to cut off man and beast from it,

Eze 14:20

Eze 14:20even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their son or their daughter. They would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.”

Eze 14:21

For thus^H3541 says^H559 Lord^H136 Yahweh^H3068, “How^H637 much^H637 more^H637^H3588 when^H3588 I send^H7971 My four^H702 calamitous^H7451 judgments^H8201 against^H413 Jerusalem^H3389: sword^H2719, famine^H7458, wild^H7451 beasts^H2416, and plague^H1698 to cut^H3772 off^H3772 man^H120 and beast^H929 from it!

Eze 14:22

Eze 14:22“Yet, behold, [fn]survivors will be left in it who will be brought out, both sons and daughters. Behold, they are going to come forth to you, and you will see their way and actions; then you will be comforted for the calamity which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought upon it.

Eze 14:23

Eze 14:23“Then they will comfort you when you see their way and actions, so you will know that I have not done in vain all that I did [fn]to it,” declares Lord Yahweh.
