Stone Tablets Like the Former Ones

(Deu 10:1–5 )

Now Yahweh^H3068 said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Carve^H6458 out^H6458 for yourself two^H8147 stone^H68 tablets^H3871 like the former^H7223 ones^H7223, and I will write^H3789 on the tablets^H3871 the words^H1697 that were on the former^H7223 tablets^H3871 which^H834 you shattered^H7665.

Exo 34:2

Exo 34:2“So be prepared by morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and [fn]present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain.

Exo 34:3

Exo 34:3“And no man is to come up with you, nor let any man be seen [fn]anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds may not graze in front of that mountain.”

Exo 34:4

Exo 34:4So he carved out two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as Yahweh had commanded him, and he took two stone tablets in his hand.

Exo 34:5

Exo 34:5Then Yahweh descended in the cloud and stood there with him, and [fn]He called upon the name of Yahweh.

Exo 34:6

Exo 34:6Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and called out, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and [fn]truth;

Exo 34:7

Exo 34:7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

Exo 34:8

Exo 34:8And Moses made haste [fn]to bow low toward the earth and worship.

Exo 34:9

Exo 34:9And he said, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though [fn]they are a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your own inheritance.”

Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Israel

(Exo 23:14–19; Deu 7:1–6; 16:1–17 )

Exo 34:10

Then [fn]God said^H559, “Behold^H2009, I am going to cut^H3772 a covenant^H1285. Before^H5048 all^H3605 your people^H5971 I will do^H6213 wondrous^H6381 deeds^H6381 which^H834 have not been created^H1254 in all^H3605 the earth^H776 nor^H3808 among any^H3605 of the nations^H1471; and all^H3605 the people^H5971 [fn]among^H7130 whom^H834 you live will see^H7200 the working^H4639 of Yahweh^H3068, for it is a fearful^H3372 thing^H3372 that I am going to do^H6213 with you.

Exo 34:11

“[fn]Be sure to keep^H8104 what^H834 I am commanding^H6680 you this day^H3117: behold^H2009, I am going to drive^H1644 out^H1644 the Amorite^H567 before^H4480^H6440 you, and the Canaanite^H3669, the Hittite^H2850, the Perizzite^H6522, the Hivite^H2340, and the Jebusite^H2983.

Exo 34:12

Exo 34:12“Beware lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, lest it become a snare in your midst.

Exo 34:13

Exo 34:13“But rather, you are to tear down their altars and shatter their sacred pillars and cut down their [fn]Asherim

Exo 34:14

Exo 34:14—for you shall not worship any other god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God—

Exo 34:15

Exo 34:15lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invite you [fn]to eat of his sacrifice,

Exo 34:16

Exo 34:16and you take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods.

Exo 34:17

Exo 34:17“You shall make for yourself no molten gods.

Exo 34:18

“You shall keep^H8104 the Feast^H2282 of Unleavened^H4682 Bread^H4682. For seven^H7651 days^H3117 you shall eat^H398 unleavened^H4682 bread^H4682, which I commanded^H6680 you, at the appointed^H4150 time^H4150 in the month^H2320 of Abib^H24, for in the month^H2320 of Abib^H24 you came^H3318 out^H3318 of Egypt^H4714.

Exo 34:19

“The first^H6363 offspring^H6363 from every^H3605 womb^H7358 belongs to Me, even of all^H3605 your male^H2145 livestock^H4735, the first^H6363 offspring^H6363 from [fn]cattle^H7794 and sheep^H7716.

Exo 34:20

Exo 34:20“And you shall redeem with a lamb the [fn]first offspring from a donkey; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem all the firstborn of your sons. [fn]None shall appear before Me empty-handed.

Exo 34:21

“You shall work^H5647 six^H8337 days^H3117, but on the seventh^H7637 day^H3117 you shall rest^H7673; even during plowing^H2758 time^H2758 and harvest^H7105 you shall rest^H7673.

Exo 34:22

Exo 34:22“And you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.

Exo 34:23

Exo 34:23“Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Exo 34:24

Exo 34:24“For I will dispossess nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no man shall covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before Yahweh your God.

Exo 34:25

“You shall not [fn]offer^H7819 the blood^H1818 of My sacrifice^H2077 with leavened^H2557 bread^H2557, and the sacrifice^H2077 of the Feast^H2282 of the Passover^H6453 shall not^H3808 [fn]be left^H3885 over^H3885 until morning^H1242.

Exo 34:26

“You shall bring^H935 the very first^H7225 of the first^H1061 fruits^H1061 of your ground^H127 into the house^H1004 of Yahweh^H3068 your God^H430.

“You shall not boil^H1310 a young^H1423 goat^H1423 in its mother’s^H517 milk^H2461.”

Exo 34:27

Then Yahweh^H3068 said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Write^H3789 [fn]down^H3789 these^H428 words^H1697, for in accordance^H5921^H6310 with these^H428 words^H1697 I have cut^H3772 a covenant^H1285 with you and with Israel^H3478.”

Exo 34:28

Exo 34:28So he was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And [fn]he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten [fn]Commandments.

The Shining Face of Moses

Exo 34:29

Now it happened^H1961 when Moses^H4872 was coming^H3381 down^H3381 from Mount^H2022 Sinai^H5514 (and the two^H8147 tablets^H3871 of the testimony^H5715 were in Moses’^H4872 hand^H3027 as he was coming^H3381 down^H3381 from the mountain^H2022), that Moses^H4872 did not know^H3045 that the skin^H5785 of his face^H6440 shone^H7160 because of his speaking^H1696 with Him.

Exo 34:30

Exo 34:30Then Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.

Exo 34:31

Exo 34:31Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers in the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them.

Exo 34:32

Exo 34:32And afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them everything that Yahweh had spoken [fn]to him on Mount Sinai.

Exo 34:33

Exo 34:33Then Moses finished speaking with them and put a veil over his face.

Exo 34:34

Exo 34:34But whenever Moses went in before Yahweh to speak with Him, he would take off the veil until he came out; and then he would come out and speak to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded,

Exo 34:35

Exo 34:35and the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. So Moses would return the veil over his face until he went in to speak with Him.
