Israel at Sinai

In the third^H7992 month^H2320 after the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 had gone^H3318 out^H3318 of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, on this day^H3117 they came^H935 into the wilderness^H4057 of Sinai^H5514.

Exo 19:2

Exo 19:2Then they set out from Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of the mountain.

Exo 19:3

Now Moses^H4872 went^H5927 up^H5927 to God^H430, and Yahweh^H3068 called^H7121 to him from the mountain^H2022, saying^H559, “Thus^H3541 you shall say^H559 to the house^H1004 of Jacob^H3290 and tell^H5046 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478:

Exo 19:4

Exo 19:4‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you up on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.

Exo 19:5

Exo 19:5‘So now then, if you will indeed listen to My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine;

Exo 19:6

Exo 19:6and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

Exo 19:7

So Moses^H4872 came^H935 and called^H7121 the elders^H2205 of the people^H5971 and set^H7760 before^H6440 them all^H3605 these^H428 words^H1697 which^H834 Yahweh^H3068 had commanded^H6680 him.

Exo 19:8

Exo 19:8And all the people answered together and said, “All that Yahweh has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to Yahweh.

Exo 19:9

Exo 19:9Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.

Exo 19:10

Yahweh^H3068 also said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Go^H1980 to the people^H5971 and set^H6942 them apart^H6942 as^H6942 holy^H6942 today^H3117 and tomorrow^H4279, and let them wash^H3526 their garments^H8071;

Exo 19:11

Exo 19:11and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day Yahweh will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.

Exo 19:12

Exo 19:12“And you shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘[fn]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.

Exo 19:13

Exo 19:13‘No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or surely [fn]shot through; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.”

Exo 19:14

Exo 19:14So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and set the people apart as holy, and they washed their garments.

Exo 19:15

Exo 19:15And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”

Exo 19:16

So it happened^H1961 on the third^H7992 day^H3117, when it was morning^H1242, that there were [fn]thunder^H6963 and lightning^H1300 flashes^H1300 and a [fn]thick^H3515 cloud^H6051 upon the mountain^H2022 and a very^H3966 loud^H2389 trumpet^H7782 sound^H6963, so that all^H3605 the people^H5971 who^H834 were in the camp^H4264 trembled^H2729.

Exo 19:17

Exo 19:17And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the [fn]foot of the mountain.

Yahweh Descends on Mount Sinai

Exo 19:18

Exo 19:18Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because Yahweh descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently.

Exo 19:19

Exo 19:19And the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder; then Moses spoke and God answered him with [fn]thunder.

Exo 19:20

Exo 19:20And Yahweh came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and Yahweh called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

Exo 19:21

Exo 19:21Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Go down, [fn]warn the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to see, and many of them [fn]perish.

Exo 19:22

Exo 19:22“Also let the priests who come near to Yahweh set themselves apart as holy, lest Yahweh break out against them.”

Exo 19:23

Exo 19:23And Moses said to Yahweh, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You [fn]warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain, and set it apart as holy.’”

Exo 19:24

Exo 19:24Then Yahweh said to him, “[fn]Go down and come up again, you and Aaron with you; but do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest He break out against them.”

Exo 19:25

Exo 19:25So Moses went down to the people and told them.
