Water from the Rock

(Num 20:1–13 )

Then all^H3605 the congregation^H5712 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 journeyed^H5265 by [fn]stages^H4550 from the wilderness^H4057 of Sin^H5512, according^H5921 to the [fn]command^H6310 of Yahweh^H3068, and they camped^H2583 at Rephidim^H7508, and there^H369 was^H369 no^H369 water^H4325 for the people^H5971 to drink^H8354.

Exo 17:2

Exo 17:2Therefore the people contended with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you test Yahweh?”

Exo 17:3

Exo 17:3But the people thirsted there for water; and [fn]they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to put [fn]us and [fn]our children and [fn]our livestock to death with thirst?”

Exo 17:4

Exo 17:4So Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.”

Exo 17:5

Exo 17:5Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Exo 17:6

Exo 17:6“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Exo 17:7

Exo 17:7So he named the place [fn]Massah and [fn]Meribah because of the contending of the sons of Israel, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, “Is Yahweh among us or not?”

Israel Overwhelms Amalek

(Gen 14:7; Num 13:29; 14:25 )

Exo 17:8

Then Amalek^H6002 came^H935 and fought^H3898 against^H5973 Israel^H3478 at Rephidim^H7508.

Exo 17:9

Exo 17:9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will take my stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

Exo 17:10

Exo 17:10And Joshua did as Moses [fn]told him, to fight against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Exo 17:11

Exo 17:11So it happened when Moses raised his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand [fn]down, Amalek prevailed.

Exo 17:12

Exo 17:12But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.

Exo 17:13

Exo 17:13So Joshua [fn]overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Exo 17:14

Then Yahweh^H3068 said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Write^H3789 this^H2088 in [fn]a book^H5612 as a memorial^H2146 and [fn]recite^H7760 it in Joshua’s^H3091 hearing^H241, [fn]that I will utterly^H4229 blot^H4229 out^H4229 the memory^H2143 of Amalek^H6002 from under^H8478 heaven^H8064.”
