The Vanity of Pleasure and Possessions

(cf. 1Ki 4:20–28 )

I said^H559 in my heart^H3820, “Come^H1980 now^H4994, I will test^H5254 you with gladness^H8057, so that you shall see^H7200 good^H2896 things^H2896.” And behold^H2009, it too^H1571 was vanity^H1892.

Ecc 2:2

Ecc 2:2I said of laughter, “It is madness,” and of gladness, “What does it do?”

Ecc 2:3

Ecc 2:3I explored with my heart how to [fn]stimulate my [fn]body with wine—while my heart was guiding me wisely—and how to seize simpleminded folly, until I could see where is this good for the sons of men in what they do under heaven the few days of their lives.

Ecc 2:4

Ecc 2:4I made my works great: I built houses for myself; I planted vineyards for myself;

Ecc 2:5

Ecc 2:5I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees;

Ecc 2:6

Ecc 2:6I made for myself pools of water from which to water a forest of growing trees.

Ecc 2:7

Ecc 2:7I bought male and female slaves, and I had [fn]homeborn slaves. Also I possessed flocks and herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem.

Ecc 2:8

Ecc 2:8Also, I collected for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself male and female singers and the pleasures of the sons of men—many concubines.

Ecc 2:9

Then I became^H1431 great^H1431 and increased^H3254 more^H4480 than^H4480 all^H3605 who^H7945 preceded^H6440 me in Jerusalem^H3389. My wisdom^H2451 also^H637 stood^H5975 by me.

Ecc 2:10

Ecc 2:10All that my eyes asked for I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any gladness, for my heart was glad because of all my labor, and this was my reward for all my labor.

Ecc 2:11

Ecc 2:11Thus I turned to all my works which my hands had done and the labor which I had labored to do, and behold, all was [fn]vanity and striving after wind, and there was no advantage under the sun.

Wisdom Excels Folly

Ecc 2:12

So I turned^H6437 to see^H7200 wisdom^H2451, madness^H1947, and simpleminded^H5531 folly^H5531. What^H4100 will the man^H120 do who^H7945 will come^H935 after^H310 the king^H4428 except what^H834 has already^H3528 been done^H6213?

Ecc 2:13

Ecc 2:13And I saw that there is an advantage in wisdom over simpleminded folly as light has an advantage over darkness.

Ecc 2:14

Ecc 2:14The wise man’s eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that the fate of one becomes the fate of all of them.

Ecc 2:15

Ecc 2:15Then I said in my heart, “As is the fate of the fool, so will my fate be also. Why then have I been extremely wise?” So I said in my heart, “This too is vanity.”

Ecc 2:16

Ecc 2:16For there is no remembrance of the wise man along with the fool forever, inasmuch as in the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man dies with the fool!

Ecc 2:17

Ecc 2:17So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was [fn]grievous to me; because everything is vanity and striving after wind.

The Vanity of Labor

Ecc 2:18

Thus I hated^H8130 all^H3605 the fruit^H5999 of^H5999 my labor^H5999 for which^H7945 I had labored^H6001 under^H8478 the sun^H8121, for I must leave^H5117 it to the man^H120 who^H7945 will come^H1961 after^H310 me.

Ecc 2:19

Ecc 2:19And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a man of simpleminded folly? Yet he will have [fn]power over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored and for which I have acted wisely under the sun. This too is vanity.

Ecc 2:20

Ecc 2:20Therefore I turned my heart to despair of all my labor for which I had labored under the sun.

Ecc 2:21

Ecc 2:21When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, then he gives his portion to one who has not labored with them. This too is vanity and a great evil.

Ecc 2:22

Ecc 2:22For what does a man get in all his labor and in the striving of his heart with which he labors under the sun?

Ecc 2:23

Ecc 2:23Because all his days his endeavor is painful and vexing; even at night his heart does not lie down. This too is vanity.

Ecc 2:24

[fn]There^H369 is^H369 nothing^H369 better^H2896 for a man^H120 than to eat^H398 and drink^H8354 and have^H7200 his soul^H5315 see good^H2896 in his labor^H5999. This^H2090 also^H1571 I have seen^H7200 that it is from the hand^H3027 of God^H430.

Ecc 2:25

Ecc 2:25For who can eat and who can have enjoyment outside of [fn]Him?

Ecc 2:26

Ecc 2:26For to a man who is good before Him, He has given wisdom and knowledge and gladness, while to the sinner He has given the endeavor of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good before God. This too is vanity and striving after wind.
