Israel Provoked Yahweh

(Exo 32:1–35 )

“Hear^H8085, O Israel^H3478! You are crossing^H5674 over^H5674 the Jordan^H3383 today^H3117 to go^H935 in^H935 to dispossess^H3423 nations^H1471 greater^H1419 and mightier^H6099 than^H4480 you, great^H1419 cities^H5892 [fn]fortified^H1219 to heaven^H8064,

Deu 9:2

Deu 9:2a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’

Deu 9:3

Deu 9:3“So you shall know today that it is Yahweh your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them, and He will subdue them before you, so that you may dispossess them and make them perish quickly, just as Yahweh has spoken to you.

Deu 9:4

“Do not say^H559 in your heart^H3824 when Yahweh^H3068 your God^H430 has driven^H1920 them out^H1920 before^H4480^H6440 you, saying^H559, ‘Because of my righteousness^H6666 Yahweh^H3068 has brought^H935 me in^H935 to possess^H3423 this^H2088 land^H776,’ but it is because of the wickedness^H7564 of these^H428 nations^H1471 that Yahweh^H3068 is dispossessing^H3423 them before^H4480^H6440 you.

Deu 9:5

Deu 9:5“It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to confirm the [fn]oath which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Deu 9:6

“So you shall know^H3045 it is not because of your righteousness^H6666 that Yahweh^H3068 your God^H430 is giving^H5414 you this^H2088 good^H2896 land^H776 to possess^H3423, for you are a [fn]stiff-necked^H7186^H6203 people^H5971.

Deu 9:7

Deu 9:7“Remember, do not forget how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you went out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh.

Deu 9:8

Deu 9:8“Even at Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.

Deu 9:9

Deu 9:9“When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which Yahweh had cut with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water.

Deu 9:10

Deu 9:10“And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which Yahweh had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

Deu 9:11

Deu 9:11“Now it happened at the end of forty days and nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

Deu 9:12

Deu 9:12“Then Yahweh said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’

Deu 9:13

Deu 9:13“Yahweh spoke further to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, [fn]they are a [fn]stiff-necked people.

Deu 9:14

Deu 9:14‘Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and more numerous than they.’

Deu 9:15

“So I turned^H6437 and came^H3381 down^H3381 from the mountain^H2022 while the mountain^H2022 was burning^H1197 with fire^H784, and the two^H8147 tablets^H3871 of the covenant^H1285 were in my two^H8147 hands^H3027.

Deu 9:16

Deu 9:16“And I saw that you had indeed sinned against Yahweh your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which Yahweh had commanded you.

Deu 9:17

Deu 9:17“And I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands and shattered them before your eyes.

Deu 9:18

Deu 9:18“And I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water because of all your sin which you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of Yahweh to provoke Him to anger.

Deu 9:19

Deu 9:19“For I was afraid of the anger and the wrath with which Yahweh was provoked against you in order to destroy you, but Yahweh listened to me that time also.

Deu 9:20

Deu 9:20“And Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time.

Deu 9:21

Deu 9:21“Now I took your [fn]sinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.

Deu 9:22

“Again at Taberah^H8404 and at Massah^H4532 and at Kibroth-hattaavah^H6914 you provoked^H7107 Yahweh^H3068 to^H7107 wrath^H7107.

Deu 9:23

Deu 9:23“When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the [fn]command of Yahweh your God; you did not believe Him, and you did not listen to His voice.

Deu 9:24

Deu 9:24“You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day I knew you.

Deu 9:25

“So I fell^H5307 down^H5307 before^H6440 Yahweh^H3068 the forty^H705 days^H3117 and the forty^H705 nights^H3915, which^H834 I [fn]did^H5307 because^H3588 Yahweh^H3068 had said^H559 He would destroy^H8045 you.

Deu 9:26

Deu 9:26“And I prayed to Yahweh and said, ‘O Lord Yahweh, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a strong hand.

Deu 9:27

Deu 9:27‘Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stiff-neck of this people or at their wickedness or their sin,

Deu 9:28

Deu 9:28lest the land from which You brought us say, “Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which He had [fn]promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.”

Deu 9:29
