Wanderings in the Wilderness

“Then we turned^H6437 and set^H5265 out^H5265 for the wilderness^H4057 by the way^H1870 to the [fn]Red^H5488 Sea^H3220, as Yahweh^H3068 spoke^H1696 to me, and circled^H5437 Mount^H2022 Seir^H8165 for many^H7227 days^H3117.

Deu 2:2

Deu 2:2“And Yahweh spoke to me, saying,

Deu 2:3

Deu 2:3‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north,

Deu 2:4

Deu 2:4and command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the territory of your brothers the sons of Esau who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful;

Deu 2:5

Deu 2:5do not [fn]provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a [fn]footstep because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

Deu 2:6

Deu 2:6“You shall buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also bargain with them for water with money so that you may drink.

Deu 2:7

Deu 2:7“For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your [fn]wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years Yahweh your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing.”’

Deu 2:8

“So we passed^H5674 beyond^H5674^H4480 our brothers^H251 the sons^H1121 of Esau^H6215, who live^H3427 in Seir^H8165, away^H4480 from the Arabah^H6160 road^H1870, away^H4480 from Elath^H359 and from Ezion-geber^H6100. And we turned^H6437 and passed^H5674 through^H5674 by the way^H1870 of the wilderness^H4057 of Moab^H4124.

Deu 2:9

Deu 2:9“Then Yahweh said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of [fn]their land as a possession because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession.’

Deu 2:10

Deu 2:10(The Emim lived there formerly, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim.

Deu 2:11

Deu 2:11Like the Anakim, they are also regarded as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.

Deu 2:12

Deu 2:12Now the Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel would do to the land of [fn]their possession which Yahweh gave to them.)

Deu 2:13

Deu 2:13‘Now arise and cross over the [fn]brook Zered yourselves.’ So we crossed over the [fn]brook Zered.

Deu 2:14

Deu 2:14“Now the [fn]time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the [fn]brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war came to an end from within the camp, as Yahweh had sworn to them.

Deu 2:15

Deu 2:15“Moreover the hand of Yahweh was against them, to bring them into confusion from within the camp until they all came to an end.

Deu 2:16

“So it happened^H1961 when^H834 all^H3605 the men^H376 of war^H4421 had come^H8552 to^H8552 an^H8552 end^H8552 in death^H4191 from among^H7130 the people^H5971,

Deu 2:17

Deu 2:17that Yahweh spoke to me, saying,

Deu 2:18

Deu 2:18‘Today you are about to cross over Ar, the border of Moab.

Deu 2:19

Deu 2:19‘And you will come opposite the sons of Ammon. Do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession.’

Deu 2:20

Deu 2:20(It is also regarded as the land of the Rephaim, for Rephaim formerly lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin,

Deu 2:21

Deu 2:21a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, but Yahweh destroyed them before them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place,

Deu 2:22

Deu 2:22just as He did for the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day.

Deu 2:23

Deu 2:23And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the [fn]Caphtorim who came from [fn]Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)

Deu 2:24

Deu 2:24‘Arise, set out, and pass through the [fn]valley of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession and provoke him to battle.

Deu 2:25

Deu 2:25‘This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you [fn]upon the peoples [fn]everywhere under the heavens, who, when they hear the report of you, will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

Deu 2:26

“So I sent^H7971 messengers^H4397 from the wilderness^H4057 of Kedemoth^H6932 to Sihon^H5511 king^H4428 of Heshbon^H2809 with words^H1697 of peace^H7965, saying^H559,

Deu 2:27

Deu 2:27‘Let me pass through your land, I will [fn]go only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left.

Deu 2:28

Deu 2:28‘You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink; only let me pass through on [fn]foot,

Deu 2:29

Deu 2:29just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God is giving to us.’

Deu 2:30

Deu 2:30“But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass [fn]through his land, for Yahweh your God stiffened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him over into your hand, as he is today.

Deu 2:31

Deu 2:31“And Yahweh said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land [fn]over to you. Begin to possess, so that you may fully possess his land.’

Deu 2:32

“Then Sihon^H5511 [fn]with all^H3605 his people^H5971 came^H3318 out^H3318 to meet^H7122 us in battle^H4421 at Jahaz^H3096.

Deu 2:33

Deu 2:33“But Yahweh our God gave him [fn]over to us, and we struck him down with his sons and all his people.

Deu 2:34

Deu 2:34“So we captured all his cities at that time and [fn]devoted to destruction [fn]the men, women, and little ones of every city. We left no survivor remaining.

Deu 2:35

Deu 2:35“We took only the animals as our plunder and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.

Deu 2:36

Deu 2:36“From Aroer which is on the edge of the [fn]valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the [fn]valley, even to Gilead, there was not a town that was too high for us; Yahweh our God gave all [fn]over to us.

Deu 2:37

Deu 2:37“Only you did not go near to the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the [fn]river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God had commanded us.
