Clean and Unclean Animals

“You are the sons^H1121 of Yahweh^H3068 your God^H430; you shall not gash^H1413 yourselves nor^H3808 [fn]shave^H7760^H7144 your forehead^H996^H5869 for the sake of the dead^H4191.

Deu 14:2

Deu 14:2“For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be a people for His [fn]treasured possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Deu 14:3

“You shall not eat^H398 any^H3605 abominable^H8441 thing^H8441.

Deu 14:4

Deu 14:4“These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,

Deu 14:5

Deu 14:5 [fn]the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.

Deu 14:6

Deu 14:6“And any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in [fn]two and [fn]chews the cud, among the animals, that one you may eat.

Deu 14:7

Deu 14:7“Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these among those which [fn]chew the cud or among those that divide the hoof in [fn]two: the camel and the [fn]rabbit and the [fn]shaphan, for though they [fn]chew the cud, they do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you.

Deu 14:8

Deu 14:8“And the pig, because it divides the hoof but does not chew the cud, it is unclean for you. You shall not eat any of their flesh nor touch their carcasses.

Deu 14:9

“These^H2088 you may eat^H398 of all^H3605 that are in water^H4325: anything^H3605 that has fins^H5579 and scales^H7193 you may eat^H398,

Deu 14:10

Deu 14:10but anything that does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.

Deu 14:11

“You may eat^H398 any^H3605 clean^H2889 bird^H6833.

Deu 14:12

Deu 14:12“But these are the ones which you shall not eat: the [fn]eagle and the vulture and the [fn]buzzard,

Deu 14:13

Deu 14:13and the red kite, the falcon, and the kite in their kinds,

Deu 14:14

Deu 14:14and every raven in its kind,

Deu 14:15

Deu 14:15and the ostrich, the owl, the gull, and the hawk in their kinds,

Deu 14:16the little owl, the [fn]great owl, the white owl,

Deu 14:17

Deu 14:17the pelican, the carrion vulture, the cormorant,

Deu 14:18

Deu 14:18the stork, and the heron in their kinds, and the hoopoe and the bat.

Deu 14:19

Deu 14:19“And all the [fn]teeming life with wings are unclean to you; they shall not be eaten.

Deu 14:20

Deu 14:20“You may eat any clean bird.

Deu 14:21

“You shall not eat^H398 anything^H3605 which^H5038 dies^H5038 of itself. You may give^H5414 it to the sojourner^H1616 who^H834 is within your gates^H8179, so that he may eat^H398 it, or^H176 you may sell^H4376 it to a foreigner^H5237, for you are a holy^H6918 people^H5971 to Yahweh^H3068 your God^H430. You shall not boil^H1310 a young^H1423 goat^H1423 in its mother’s^H517 milk^H2461.

Deu 14:22

“You shall surely^H6237 tithe^H6237 all^H3605 the produce^H8393 from [fn]what^H2233 you sow^H2233, which comes^H3318 out^H3318 of the field^H7704 every^H8141 year^H8141.

Deu 14:23

Deu 14:23“And you shall eat in the presence of Yahweh your God, at the place where He chooses for His name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to fear Yahweh your God all your days.

Deu 14:24

Deu 14:24“And if the [fn]distance is so great for you that you are not able to [fn]bring the tithe, since the place where Yahweh your God chooses to set His name is too far away from you when Yahweh your God blesses you,

Deu 14:25

Deu 14:25then you shall [fn]exchange it for money and bind the money in your hand and go to the place which Yahweh your God chooses.

Deu 14:26

Deu 14:26“And you may spend the money for whatever your [fn]heart desires: for oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink or whatever your [fn]heart [fn]desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and be glad, you and your household.

Deu 14:27

Deu 14:27“Also you shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no portion or inheritance among you.

Deu 14:28

“At the end^H7097 of every third^H7969 year^H8141 you shall bring^H3318 out^H3318 all^H3605 the tithe^H4643 of your produce^H8393 in that year^H8141 and shall deposit^H5117 it within your gates^H8179.

Deu 14:29

Deu 14:29“And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the sojourner, the [fn]orphan, and the widow who are within your gates, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
