Belshazzar’s Feast

Belshazzar^H1113 the king^H4430 [fn]held^H5648 a great^H7229 feast^H3900 for one thousand^H506 of his nobles^H7261, and he was drinking^H8355 wine^H2562 in the presence^H6903 of the thousand^H506.

Dan 5:2

Dan 5:2When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he said to bring the gold and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his [fn]father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them.

Dan 5:3

Dan 5:3Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God which was in Jerusalem; and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them.

Dan 5:4

Dan 5:4They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

Dan 5:5

Suddenly^H8160 the fingers^H677 of a man’s^H606 hand^H3028 came^H5312 out^H5312 and began writing^H3790 opposite^H6903 the lampstand^H5043 on the plaster^H1528 of the wall^H3797 of the king’s^H4430 palace^H1965, and the king^H4430 saw^H2370 the [fn]back^H6447 of the hand^H3028 that did the writing^H3790.

Dan 5:6

Dan 5:6Then the [fn]splendor of the king’s face changed, and his thoughts alarmed him, and his hip joints [fn]went slack, and his knees were knocking against each other.

Dan 5:7

Dan 5:7The king called out loudly to bring in the conjurers, the [fn]Chaldeans, and the diviners. The king answered and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Any man who can read this writing and declare its interpretation to me shall be clothed with purple and have a necklace of gold around his neck and rule with power as [fn]third ruler in the kingdom.”

Dan 5:8

Dan 5:8Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or make known its interpretation to the king.

Dan 5:9

Dan 5:9Then King Belshazzar was greatly alarmed, and the [fn]splendor of his face changed further, and his nobles were perplexed.

Dan 5:10

The queen^H4433 entered^H5954 the banquet^H4961 [fn]hall^H1005 because^H6903 of the words^H4406 of the king^H4430 and his nobles^H7261; the queen^H4433 answered^H6032 and said^H560, “O king^H4430, live^H2418 forever^H5957! Do not let your thoughts^H7476 alarm^H927 you or the [fn]splendor^H2122 of your face be changed^H8133.

Dan 5:11

Dan 5:11“There is a man in your kingdom in whom is [fn]a spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, illumination, insight, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, your father [fn]the king, set him as chief of the [fn]magicians, conjurers, [fn]Chaldeans, and diviners.

Dan 5:12

Dan 5:12“This was because an extraordinary spirit, knowledge and insight, interpretation of dreams, explanation of enigmas, and [fn]solving of difficult problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Let Daniel now be summoned, and he will declare the interpretation.”

Daniel Interprets the Writing on the Wall

Dan 5:13

Then^H116 Daniel^H1841 was brought^H5954 in^H5954 before^H6925 the king^H4430. The king^H4430 answered^H6032 and said^H560 to Daniel^H1841, “Are you that Daniel^H1841 who^H1768 is one of the [fn]exiles^H1123^H1547 from Judah^H3061, whom^H1768 my father^H2 the king^H4430 brought^H858 from Judah^H3061?

Dan 5:14

Dan 5:14“Now I have heard about you that [fn]a spirit of the gods is in you, and that illumination, insight, and extraordinary wisdom have been found in you.

Dan 5:15

Dan 5:15“Just now the wise men and the conjurers were brought in before me that they might read this writing and make its interpretation known to me, but they could not declare the interpretation of the [fn]message.

Dan 5:16

Dan 5:16“But I personally have heard about you, that you are able to give interpretations and [fn]solve difficult problems. Now if you are able to read the writing and make its interpretation known to me, you will be clothed with purple and wear a necklace of gold around your neck, and you will rule with power as the [fn]third ruler in the kingdom.”

Dan 5:17

Then^H116 Daniel^H1841 answered^H6032 and said^H560 before^H6925 the king^H4430, “Let your gifts^H4978 remain with you or give^H3052 your rewards^H5023 to someone^H321 else^H321; however^H1297, I will read^H7123 the writing^H3792 to the king^H4430 and make^H3046 the interpretation^H6591 known^H3046 to him.

Dan 5:18

Dan 5:18“[fn]O king, the Most High God granted the kingdom, grandeur, glory, and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.

Dan 5:19

Dan 5:19“And because of the grandeur which He bestowed on him, all the peoples, nations, and men of every tongue feared and were in dread before him; whomever he wished he killed, and whomever he wished he kept alive, and whomever he wished he raised up, and whomever he wished he made low.

Dan 5:20

Dan 5:20“But when his heart was raised up and his spirit became so strong that he behaved arrogantly, he was deposed from his royal throne, and his glory was taken away from him.

Dan 5:21

Dan 5:21“He was also driven away from the sons of [fn]men, and his heart was made like that of beasts, and his place of habitation was with the wild donkeys. He was given grass to eat like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of the sky until he knew that the Most High God is the powerful ruler over the kingdom of mankind and that He sets up over it whomever He wishes.

Dan 5:22

Dan 5:22“Yet you, his [fn]son, Belshazzar, have not made your heart lowly, [fn]even though you knew all this,

Dan 5:23

Dan 5:23but you have raised yourself up against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines have been drinking wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which do not see, hear, or know. But the God in whose hand are your life-breath and all your ways, you have not honored.

Dan 5:24

Dan 5:24“Then the [fn]hand was sent from Him, and this writing was [fn]inscribed.

Dan 5:25

“Now this^H1836 is the writing^H3792 that was [fn]inscribed^H7560: ‘[fn]MENĒ^H4484, [fn]MENĒ^H4484, [fn]TEKĒL^H8625, [fn]UPHARSIN^H6537.’

Dan 5:26

Dan 5:26“This is the interpretation of the [fn]message: ‘MENĒ’—God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.

Dan 5:27

Dan 5:27“‘TEKĒL’—you have been weighed on the scales and found lacking.

Dan 5:28

Dan 5:28“‘PERĒS’—your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and [fn]Persians.”

Dan 5:29

Then^H116 Belshazzar^H1113 said^H560 the word, and they clothed^H3848 Daniel^H1841 with purple^H711 and put a necklace^H2002 of gold^H1722 around^H5922 his neck^H6676 and issued^H3745 a^H3745 proclamation^H3745 concerning^H5922 him that he now would^H1934 be^H1934 the [fn]third^H8531 powerful^H7990 ruler^H7990 in the kingdom^H4437.
