Selection of the Seven

Now in^G1722 those^G3778 days^G2250, while the disciples^G3101 were multiplying^G4129 in number, there was^G1069 grumbling^G1112 from the [fn]Hellenists^G1675 against^G4314 the Hebrews^G1445, because^G3754 their widows^G5503 were being overlooked^G3865 in the daily^G2522 serving^G1248 of food.

Act 6:2

Act 6:2So the twelve summoned the [fn]congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not pleasing to God for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.

Act 6:3

Act 6:3“Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this need.

Act 6:4

Act 6:4“But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.”

Act 6:5

Act 6:5And this word pleased the whole [fn]congregation, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a [fn]proselyte from Antioch.

Act 6:6

Act 6:6And these they stood before the apostles, and after praying, they laid their hands on them.

Act 6:7

And the word^G3056 of God^G2316 kept on spreading^G837, and the number^G706 of the disciples^G3101 continued to multiply^G4129 greatly^G4970 in Jerusalem^G2419, and a great^G4183 [fn]many^G3793 of the priests^G2409 were becoming^G5219 obedient^G5219 to the faith^G4102.

Stephen Accused of Blasphemy

Act 6:8

And Stephen^G4736, full^G4134 of grace^G5485 and power^G1411, was doing^G4160 great^G3173 wonders^G5059 and [fn]signs^G4592 among^G1722 the people^G2992.

Act 6:9

Act 6:9But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and [fn]Asia, rose up and were arguing with Stephen.

Act 6:10

Act 6:10But they were unable to oppose the wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking.

Act 6:11

Act 6:11Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

Act 6:12

Act 6:12And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they came up to him, dragged him away, and brought him to the Sanhedrin.

Act 6:13

Act 6:13And they put forward false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases speaking words against this holy place and the Law;

Act 6:14

Act 6:14for we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and alter the customs which Moses handed down to us.”

Act 6:15

Act 6:15And fixing their gaze on him, all who were sitting in the Sanhedrin saw his face like the face of an angel.
