And when they heard^G191 that he was addressing^G4377 them in the Hebrew^G1446 language^G1258, they became^G3930 even quieter^G3123; and he *said^G5346,

Act 22:3

“I am^G1510 a Jew^G2453, born^G1080 in Tarsus^G5019 of Cilicia^G2791, but having been brought^G397 up^G397 in this^G3778 city^G4172, having been instructed^G3811 at^G3844 the^G3588 feet^G4228 of Gamaliel^G1059 according^G2596 to the strictness^G195 of the law^G3551 of our fathers^G3971, being^G5225 zealous^G2207 for God^G2316 just^G2531 as you all^G3956 are today^G4594,

Act 22:4

Act 22:4I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering both men and women into prisons,

Act 22:5

Act 22:5as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders [fn]can testify. From them I also received letters to the brothers, and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem [fn]as prisoners to be punished.

Act 22:6

“But it happened^G1096 that as I was^G4198 on^G4198 my way^G4198, approaching^G1448 Damascus^G1154 about^G4012 noontime^G3314, a very^G2425 bright^G2425 light^G5457 suddenly^G1810 flashed^G4015 from heaven^G3772 all^G4012 around^G4012 me,

Act 22:7

Act 22:7and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

Act 22:8“And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’

Act 22:9

Act 22:9“And those who were with me beheld the light, to be sure, but did not [fn]understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.

Act 22:10

Act 22:10“And I said, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise up and go on into Damascus, and there you will be told of all that has been determined for you to do.’

Act 22:11

Act 22:11“But since I could not see because of the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

Act 22:12

“Now a certain^G5100 Ananias^G367, a man^G435 who was devout^G2126 by the standard^G3358 of the Law^G3551, and well^G3140 spoken^G3140 of by all^G3956 the Jews^G2453 who lived^G2730 there,

Act 22:13

Act 22:13came to me, and standing near, said to me, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight!’ And [fn]at that very hour I regained my sight and saw him.

Act 22:14

Act 22:14“And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear a [fn]voice from His mouth.

Act 22:15

Act 22:15‘For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

Act 22:16

Act 22:16‘Now why do you delay? Rise up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’

Act 22:17

“Now it happened^G1096 when I returned^G5290 to Jerusalem^G2419 and was praying^G4336 in the temple^G2413, that I fell^G1096 into a trance^G1611,

Act 22:18

Act 22:18and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your witness about Me.’

Act 22:19

Act 22:19“And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You.

Act 22:20

Act 22:20‘And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and guarding the garments of those who were slaying him.’

Act 22:21

Act 22:21“And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

And they were listening^G191 to him up to this^G3778 statement^G3056, and then they raised^G1869 their voices^G5456 and said^G3004, “Away^G142 with such^G5108 a fellow^G5108 from the earth^G1093, for he should^G2520 not be^G2520 allowed^G2520 to live^G2198!”

Act 22:23

Act 22:23And as they were crying out and throwing off their garments and tossing dust into the air,

Act 22:24

Act 22:24the [fn]commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, stating that he should be examined by flogging so that he might find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way.

Act 22:25

Act 22:25But when they stretched him out [fn]with leather straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it [fn]lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?”

Act 22:26

Act 22:26And when the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported to him, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.”

Act 22:27

Act 22:27And the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said, “Yes.”

Act 22:28

Act 22:28And the commander answered, “I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money.” And Paul said, “But I have been born a citizen.”

Act 22:29

Act 22:29Therefore those who were about to examine him immediately withdrew from him; and the commander also was afraid when he learned that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

Act 22:30

But on the next^G1887 day^G1887, wishing^G1014 to know^G1097 for certain^G804 why^G5101 he had been accused^G2723 by the Jews^G2453, he released^G3089 him and ordered^G2753 the chief^G749 priests^G749 and all^G3956 the Sanhedrin^G4892 to come^G4905 together^G4905, and brought^G2609 Paul^G3972 down^G2609 and set^G2476 him before^G1519 them.
