Paul Sets Out for Jerusalem

Now when^G5613 we had parted^G645 from them and had set^G321 sail^G321, we came^G2113 by^G2113 a^G2113 straight^G2113 course^G2113 to Cos^G2972 and the next^G1836 day to Rhodes^G4499 and from^G2547 there^G2547 to Patara^G3959;

Act 21:2

Act 21:2and having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.

Act 21:3

Act 21:3And when we came in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we kept sailing to Syria and landed at Tyre; for there the ship was to unload its cargo.

Act 21:4

Act 21:4And after looking up the disciples, we stayed there seven days; and they kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem.

Act 21:5

Act 21:5And when [fn]our days there were ended, we left and started on our journey, while they all, with wives and children, escorted us until we were out of the city. After kneeling down on the beach and praying, we said farewell to one another.

Act 21:6

Act 21:6Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home again.

Act 21:7

And when we had finished^G1274 the voyage^G4144 from Tyre^G5184, we arrived^G2658 at Ptolemais^G4424, and after greeting^G782 the brothers^G80, we stayed^G3306 with them for a day^G2250.

Act 21:8

Act 21:8And on the next day we left and came to Caesarea, and entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him.

Act 21:9

Act 21:9Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

Act 21:10

Act 21:10And as we were staying there for some days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

Act 21:11

Act 21:11And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

Act 21:12

Act 21:12And when we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him not to go up to Jerusalem.

Act 21:13

Act 21:13Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, crying and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Act 21:14

Act 21:14And since he would not be persuaded, we fell silent, saying, “The will of the Lord be done!”

Act 21:15

Now after^G3326 these^G3778 days^G2250 we got^G643 ready^G643 and started^G305 on^G305 our way^G305 up^G305 to Jerusalem^G2414.

Act 21:16

Act 21:16And some of the disciples from Caesarea also came with us, taking us to Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple with whom we were to lodge.

Act 21:17

And after^G1161 we arrived^G1096 in Jerusalem^G2414, the brothers^G80 welcomed^G588 us gladly^G780.

In Jerusalem

Act 21:18

Act 21:18And the following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present.

Act 21:19

Act 21:19And after he had greeted them, he began to relate one by one the things which God did among the Gentiles through his ministry.

Act 21:20

Act 21:20And when they heard it they began glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many [fn]thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law;

Act 21:21

Act 21:21and they have been told about you, that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children nor to [fn]walk according to the customs.

Act 21:22

Act 21:22“What, then, is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come.

Act 21:23

Act 21:23“Therefore do this that we tell you. We have four men who [fn]are under a vow;

Act 21:24

Act 21:24take them and purify yourself along with them, and [fn]pay their expenses so that they may shave their [fn]heads. Then all will know that there is nothing to the things which they have been told about you, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Law.

Act 21:25

Act 21:25“But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we wrote, having decided that they should keep from [fn]meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from sexual immorality.”

Act 21:26

Act 21:26Then Paul [fn]took the men, and the next day, purifying himself along with them, went into the temple giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them.

Paul Is Arrested

Act 21:27

Now when^G5613 the seven^G2033 days^G2250 were almost^G3195 over^G4931, the Jews^G2453 from [fn]Asia^G773, upon noticing^G2300 him in the temple^G2413, began to throw^G4797 all^G3956 the crowd^G3793 into^G4797 confusion^G4797 and laid^G1911 hands^G5495 on him,

Act 21:28

Act 21:28crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches to everyone everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”

Act 21:29

Act 21:29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.

Act 21:30

Act 21:30Then all the city was stirred, and [fn]the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.

Act 21:31

Act 21:31While they were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the [fn]commander of the Roman [fn]cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

Act 21:32

Act 21:32At once he took along soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

Act 21:33

Act 21:33Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done.

Act 21:34

Act 21:34But among the crowd some were shouting one thing and some another, and when he could not find out the [fn]facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks.

Act 21:35

Act 21:35And when he got to the stairs, he actually was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;

Act 21:36

Act 21:36for the multitude of the people kept following them, shouting, “Away with him!”

Paul’s Defense Before the Jews

Act 21:37

Act 21:38

Act 21:38“Then you are not the Egyptian who some [fn]time ago raised a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?”

Act 21:39

Act 21:39But Paul said, “I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city; and I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”

Act 21:40

Act 21:40And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, motioned to the people with his hand; and when there [fn]was a great hush, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
