Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

Now Paul also^G2532 arrived^G2658 at Derbe^G1191 and at Lystra^G3082. And behold^G2400, a disciple^G3101 was there^G1563, named^G3686 Timothy^G5095, the son^G5207 of a Jewish^G2453 woman^G1135 who was a believer^G4103, but his father^G3962 was a Greek^G1672,

Act 16:2

Act 16:2and he was well spoken of by the brothers who were in Lystra and Iconium.

Act 16:3

Act 16:3Paul wanted this man to [fn]go with him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Act 16:4

Act 16:4Now while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering the decrees which had been decided upon by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem, for them to keep.

Act 16:5

Act 16:5So the churches were being strengthened [fn]in the faith, and were abounding in number daily.

The Macedonian Vision

Act 16:6

And they passed^G1330 through^G1330 the [fn]Phrygian^G5435 and Galatian^G1054 region^G5561, having been forbidden^G2967 by the Holy^G40 Spirit^G4151 to speak^G2980 the word^G3056 in [fn]Asia^G773;

Act 16:7

Act 16:7and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;

Act 16:8

Act 16:8and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

Act 16:9

Act 16:9And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

Act 16:10

Act 16:10And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to [fn]go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the gospel to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

Act 16:11

So^G3767 setting^G321 sail^G321 from Troas^G5174, we ran^G2113 a^G2113 straight^G2113 course^G2113 to Samothrace^G4543, and on the day following^G1897 to Neapolis^G3496;

Act 16:12

Act 16:12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia, a Roman colony; and we were staying in this city for some days.

Act 16:13

Act 16:13And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and sitting down, we began speaking to the women who had assembled.

Act 16:14

Act 16:14And a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening, whose heart the Lord opened to pay attention to the things spoken by Paul.

Act 16:15

Act 16:15And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.

Paul and Silas in Prison

Act 16:16

Now it happened^G1096 that as we were going^G4198 to the place^G4335 of prayer^G4335, a servant-girl^G3814 having^G2192 a spirit^G4151 of divination^G4436 met^G5221 us, who^G3748 was bringing^G3930 her masters^G2962 much^G4183 profit^G2039 by fortune-telling^G3132.

Act 16:17

Act 16:17Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you [fn]the way of salvation.”

Act 16:18

Act 16:18And she continued doing this for many days. But being greatly annoyed, Paul turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to leave her!” And it left at that very [fn]moment.

Act 16:19

But when her masters^G2962 saw^G3708 that their hope^G1680 of profit^G2039 had left^G1831, they seized^G1949 Paul^G3972 and Silas^G4609 and dragged^G1670 them into the marketplace^G58 before^G1909 the authorities^G758,

Act 16:20

Act 16:20and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews,

Act 16:21

Act 16:21and are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”

Act 16:22

Act 16:22And the crowd joined together to attack them, and the chief magistrates, tearing their garments off of them, proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.

Act 16:23

Act 16:23And when they had inflicted them with many wounds, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely,

Act 16:24

Act 16:24who, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the [fn]stocks.

The Philippian Jailer Converted

Act 16:25

But about^G2596 midnight^G3317 Paul^G3972 and Silas^G4609 were praying^G4336 and singing^G5214 hymns^G5214 of^G5214 praise^G5214 to God^G2316, and the prisoners^G1198 were listening^G1874 to^G1874 them.

Act 16:26

Act 16:26And suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the jailhouse were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

Act 16:27

Act 16:27And when the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

Act 16:28

Act 16:28But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”

Act 16:29

Act 16:29And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas,

Act 16:30

Act 16:30and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

Act 16:31

Act 16:31And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your house.”

Act 16:32

Act 16:32And they spoke the word of [fn]the Lord to him together with all who were in his household.

Act 16:33

Act 16:33And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.

Act 16:34

Act 16:34And he brought them into his house and set [fn]food before them, and rejoiced [fn]greatly with his whole household, because he had believed in God.

Act 16:35

Now^G1161 when day^G2250 came^G1096, the chief^G4755 magistrates^G4755 sent^G649 their policemen^G4465, saying^G3004, “Release^G630 those^G1565 men^G444.”

Act 16:36

Act 16:36And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The chief magistrates have sent to release you. Therefore come out now and go in peace.”

Act 16:37

Act 16:37But Paul said to them, “Having beaten us in public without trial, men who are Romans, they have thrown us into prison. And now are they sending us away secretly? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out.”
