David Anointed King over All Israel

(1Ch 11:1–3 )

Then all^H3605 the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478 came^H935 to David^H1732 at Hebron^H2275 and [fn]said^H559, “Behold^H2009, we are your bone^H6106 and your flesh^H1320.

2Sa 5:2

2Sa 5:2“Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and Yahweh said to you, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be a ruler over Israel.’”

2Sa 5:3

2Sa 5:3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David cut a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; then they anointed David king over Israel.

2Sa 5:4

2Sa 5:4Now David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years.

2Sa 5:5

2Sa 5:5At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

2Sa 5:6

Then the king^H4428 and his men^H376 went^H1980 to Jerusalem^H3389 against^H413 the Jebusites^H2983, the inhabitants^H3427 of the land^H776, and they said^H559 to [fn]David^H1732, “You shall not come^H935 in^H935 here^H2008, but the blind^H5787 and lame^H6455 will turn^H5493 you away^H5493”; [fn]thinking^H559, “David^H1732 cannot^H3808 enter^H935 here^H2008.”

2Sa 5:7Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion, that is the city of David.

2Sa 5:8

2Sa 5:8And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike down the Jebusites, let him reach the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul, through the water tunnel.” Therefore they say, “The blind or the lame shall not come into the house.”

2Sa 5:9

2Sa 5:9Then David lived in the fortress and called it the city of David. And David built all around from the [fn]Millo and inward.

2Sa 5:10

2Sa 5:10And David became greater and greater, and Yahweh, the God of hosts, was with him.

2Sa 5:11

Then Hiram^H2438 king^H4428 of Tyre^H6865 sent^H7971 messengers^H4397 to David^H1732 with cedar^H730 trees^H6086 and craftsmen^H2796 of wood^H6086 and craftsmen^H2796 of stone^H68 walls^H7023; and they built^H1129 a house^H1004 for David^H1732.

2Sa 5:12

2Sa 5:12Thus David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, and that He had lifted up his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

Children Born to David in Jerusalem

2Sa 5:13

And David^H1732 took^H3947 more^H5750 concubines^H6370 and wives^H802 from Jerusalem^H3389, after^H310 he came^H935 from Hebron^H2275; and more^H5750 sons^H1121 and daughters^H1323 were born^H3205 to David^H1732.

2Sa 5:14

2Sa 5:14Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

2Sa 5:15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,

2Sa 5:16

2Sa 5:16Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

David Goes Up Against the Philistines

(1Ch 14:8–17 )

2Sa 5:17

Then the Philistines^H6430 heard^H8085 that they had anointed^H4886 David^H1732 king^H4428 over^H5921 Israel^H3478, so all^H3605 the Philistines^H6430 went^H5927 up^H5927 to seek^H1245 out^H1245 David^H1732. And David^H1732 heard^H8085 of it and went^H3381 down^H3381 to the fortress^H4686.

2Sa 5:18Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim.

2Sa 5:19

2Sa 5:19Then David asked of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?” And Yahweh said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”

2Sa 5:20

2Sa 5:20So David came to Baal-perazim, and there David struck them down; and he said, “Yahweh has broken through my enemies before me, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place [fn]Baal-perazim.

2Sa 5:21

2Sa 5:21And they forsook their idols there; so David and his men carried them away.

2Sa 5:22

Then the Philistines^H6430 yet^H3254^H5750 again^H3254 came^H5927 up^H5927 and spread^H5203 themselves out^H5203 in the valley^H6010 of Rephaim^H7497.

2Sa 5:23

2Sa 5:23So David asked of Yahweh, and He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the [fn]balsam trees.

2Sa 5:24

2Sa 5:24“And it will be that when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the [fn]balsam trees, then you shall act promptly, for then Yahweh will have gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
