Now David^H1732 had passed^H5674 a little^H4592 beyond^H4480 the summit^H7218, and behold^H2009, Ziba^H6717 the young^H5288 man^H5288 of Mephibosheth^H4648 met^H7122 him with a couple^H6776 of saddled^H2280 donkeys^H2543, and on them were two^H3967 hundred^H3967 loaves of bread^H3899, one hundred^H3967 clusters^H6778 of^H6778 raisins^H6778, one hundred^H3967 summer^H7019 fruits^H7019, and a jug^H5035 of wine^H3196.

2Sa 16:2And the king said to Ziba, “Why do you have these?” And Ziba said, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride, and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat, and the wine, for whoever is faint in the wilderness to drink.”

2Sa 16:3Then the king said, “And where is your master’s son?” And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will return the kingdom of my father to me.’”

2Sa 16:4So the king said to Ziba, “Behold, all that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours.” And Ziba said, “I prostrate myself; let me find favor in your sight, O my lord, the king!”

And King^H4428 David^H1732 came^H935 to Bahurim^H980, and behold^H2009, there came^H3318 out^H3318 from there^H8033 a man^H376 of the family^H4940 of the house^H1004 of Saul^H7586 whose name^H8034 was Shimei^H8096, the son^H1121 of Gera^H1617; he came^H3318 out^H3318 cursing^H7043 continually as he came^H3318.

2Sa 16:6He also threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David; and all the people and all the mighty men were at his right hand and at his left.

2Sa 16:7

2Sa 16:7And thus Shimei said when he cursed, “Get out, get out, you man of bloodshed, and vile fellow!

2Sa 16:8

2Sa 16:8“Yahweh has returned upon you all the bloodshed of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and Yahweh has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. And behold, you are taken in your own evil, for you are a man of bloodshed!”

Then Abishai^H52 the son^H1121 of Zeruiah^H6870 said^H559 to the king^H4428, “Why^H4100 should this^H2088 dead^H4191 dog^H3611 curse^H7043 my lord^H113 the king^H4428? Let me pass^H5674 over^H5674 now^H4994 and remove^H5493 his head^H7218.”

2Sa 16:10But the king said, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses, and if Yahweh has told him, ‘Curse David,’ then who shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’”

2Sa 16:11

2Sa 16:11Then David said to Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my son who came forth from my body seeks my life; how much more now this Benjamite? Let him alone and let him curse, for Yahweh has told him.

2Sa 16:12

2Sa 16:12“Perhaps Yahweh will look on my affliction and [fn]return good to me instead of his cursing this day.”

2Sa 16:13

2Sa 16:13So David and his men went on the way; and Shimei went along on the hillside parallel with him and as he went he cursed and cast stones and threw dust at him.

2Sa 16:14Then the king and all the people who were with him arrived weary and he refreshed himself there.

Now Absalom^H53 and all^H3605 the people^H5971, the men^H376 of Israel^H3478, had entered^H935 Jerusalem^H3389, and Ahithophel^H302 with him.

2Sa 16:16

2Sa 16:16And it happened that when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, came to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

2Sa 16:17

2Sa 16:17And Absalom said to Hushai, “Is this your lovingkindness to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?”

2Sa 16:18

2Sa 16:18Then Hushai said to Absalom, “No! For whom Yahweh, this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his I will be, and with him I will remain.

2Sa 16:19

2Sa 16:19“Besides, whom should I serve? Should I not serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so I will be in your presence.”

2Sa 16:20

2Sa 16:20

Then Absalom^H53 said^H559 to Ahithophel^H302, “Give^H3051 your advice^H6098. What^H4100 shall we do^H6213?”

2Sa 16:21

2Sa 16:21And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself odious to your father. The hands of all who are with you will also be strengthened.”

2Sa 16:22

2Sa 16:22So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

2Sa 16:23

2Sa 16:23Now the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counseled in those days, was as if one asked of the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel regarded by both David and Absalom.
