Jehoram Restores the Shunammite’s Land

Now Elisha^H477 spoke^H1696 to the woman^H802 whose^H834 son^H1121 he had restored^H2421 to^H2421 life^H2421, saying^H559, “Arise^H6965 and go^H1980 [fn]with your household^H1004, and sojourn^H1481 wherever^H834 you can sojourn^H1481; for Yahweh^H3068 has called^H7121 for a famine^H7458, and it will even^H1571 come^H935 on the land^H776 for seven^H7651 years^H8141.”

2Ki 8:2

2Ki 8:2So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God, and she went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

2Ki 8:3

2Ki 8:3Now it happened at the end of seven years, that the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went out to cry out to the king for her house and for her field.

2Ki 8:4

2Ki 8:4Now the king was speaking with Gehazi, the young man of the man of God, saying, “Please recount to me all the great things that Elisha has done.”

2Ki 8:5

2Ki 8:5Now it happened as he was recounting to the king how he had restored to life the one who was dead, that behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life was crying out to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.”

2Ki 8:6

2Ki 8:6Then the king asked the woman, and she recounted it to him. So the king appointed for her a certain officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now.”

Elisha Weeps over Hazael’s Evil

2Ki 8:7

Then Elisha^H477 came^H935 to Damascus^H1834. Now Ben-hadad^H1130 king^H4428 of Aram^H758 was^H2470 sick^H2470, and it was told^H5046 to him, saying^H559, “The man^H376 of God^H430 has come^H935 here^H5704^H2008.”

2Ki 8:8

2Ki 8:8And the king said to Hazael, “Take a present in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of Yahweh by him, saying, ‘Will I be restored to life from this sickness?’”

2Ki 8:9

2Ki 8:9So Hazael went to meet him and took a present in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ loads; and he came and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I be restored to life from this sickness?’”

2Ki 8:10

2Ki 8:10Then Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You will surely be restored to life,’ but Yahweh has shown me that he will certainly die.”

2Ki 8:11

2Ki 8:11And he [fn]fixed his gaze steadily on him until he was ashamed, and the man of God wept.

2Ki 8:12

2Ki 8:12Then Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” Then he said, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: their fortifications you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword, and their infants you will dash in pieces, and their pregnant women you will rip up.”

2Ki 8:13

2Ki 8:13Then Hazael said, “But what is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?” And Elisha [fn]answered, “Yahweh has shown me that you will be king over Aram.”

2Ki 8:14

2Ki 8:14So he went from Elisha and came to his master. And he said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he said, “He said to me that you would surely be restored to life.”

2Ki 8:15

2Ki 8:15Now it happened that on the following day, he took the cover and dipped it in water and spread it on his face; so he died. And Hazael became king in his place.

Jehoram Reigns over Judah

2Ki 8:16

Now in the fifth^H2568 year^H8141 of Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, Jehoshaphat^H3092 being then the king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, Jehoram^H3088 the son^H1121 of Jehoshaphat^H3092 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063 became^H4427 king^H4427.

2Ki 8:17

2Ki 8:17He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

2Ki 8:18

2Ki 8:18And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab became his wife; and he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh.

2Ki 8:19

2Ki 8:19However, Yahweh was not willing to make Judah a ruin, for the sake of David His servant, since He had [fn]promised him to give a [fn]lamp to him through his sons always.

2Ki 8:20

In his days^H3117 Edom^H123 revolted^H6586 from under^H8478 the hand^H3027 of Judah^H3063 and made^H4427 a king^H4428 over^H5921 themselves.

2Ki 8:21

2Ki 8:21Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck the Edomites who were surrounding him and the commanders of the chariots; but [fn]his army fled to their tents.

2Ki 8:22

2Ki 8:22So Edom revolted [fn]against Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.

2Ki 8:23

2Ki 8:23Now the rest of the acts of Joram and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

Ahaziah Reigns over Judah

2Ki 8:24

2Ki 8:24So Joram slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Ahaziah his son became king in his place.

In the twelfth^H8147^H6240 year^H8141 of Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, Ahaziah^H274 the son^H1121 of Jehoram^H3088 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063 became king^H4427.

2Ki 8:26

2Ki 8:26Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.

2Ki 8:27

2Ki 8:27He also walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, like the house of Ahab had done, because he was a son-in-law of the house of Ahab.

2Ki 8:28

Then he went^H1980 with Joram^H3141 the son^H1121 of Ahab^H256 to war^H4421 with^H5973 Hazael^H2371 king^H4428 of Aram^H758 at Ramoth-gilead^H7433, and the Arameans^H761 struck^H5221 Joram^H3141.

2Ki 8:29

2Ki 8:29So King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had caused by striking him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.
