Elijah Taken to Heaven

Now it happened^H1961 when Yahweh^H3068 was about^H1961 to take^H5927 up^H5927 Elijah^H452 by a [fn]whirlwind^H5591 to heaven^H8064, that Elijah^H452 went^H1980 with Elisha^H477 from Gilgal^H1537.

2Ki 2:2

2Ki 2:2And Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here please, for Yahweh has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, I will not forsake you.” So they went down to Bethel.

2Ki 2:3

2Ki 2:3Then the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from over [fn]you today?” And he said, “Yes, I know; be silent.”

2Ki 2:4

And Elijah^H452 said^H559 to him, “Elisha^H477, please^H4994 stay^H3427 here^H6311, for Yahweh^H3068 has sent^H7971 me to Jericho^H3405.” But he said^H559, “As Yahweh^H3068 lives^H2416 and as your soul^H5315 lives^H2416, I will not forsake^H5800 you.” So they came^H935 to Jericho^H3405.

2Ki 2:5Then the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from over [fn]you today?” And he [fn]answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.”

2Ki 2:6

2Ki 2:6Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” And he said, “As Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, I will not forsake you.” So the two of them went on.

2Ki 2:7

Now fifty^H2572 men^H376 of the sons^H1121 of the prophets^H5030 went^H1980 and stood^H5975 opposite^H4480^H5048 them at a distance^H7350, but the two^H8147 of them stood^H5975 by the Jordan^H3383.

2Ki 2:8

2Ki 2:8And Elijah took his mantle and folded it together and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

2Ki 2:9

Now it happened when they crossed^H5674 over^H5674, that Elijah^H452 said^H559 to Elisha^H477, “Ask^H7592 what^H4100 I shall do^H6213 for you before^H2962 I am taken^H3947 from you.” And Elisha^H477 said^H559, “Please^H4994, let a double^H8147 portion^H6310 of your spirit^H7307 be upon me.”

2Ki 2:10

2Ki 2:10And he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.”

2Ki 2:11

2Ki 2:11As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire, and it separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a [fn]whirlwind to heaven.

2Ki 2:12

2Ki 2:12And Elisha was seeing this and he was crying out, “My father, my father, the [fn]chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw [fn]Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

2Ki 2:13

2Ki 2:13He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

2Ki 2:14

2Ki 2:14And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, “Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?” Indeed, he himself also struck the waters, and they were divided here and there! And Elisha crossed over.

Elisha Has the Spirit of Elijah

2Ki 2:15

Then the sons^H1121 of the prophets^H5030 who^H834 were at Jericho^H3405 opposite^H4480^H5048 him saw^H7200 him and said^H559, “The spirit^H7307 of Elijah^H452 rests^H5117 on Elisha^H477.” And they came^H935 to meet^H7122 him and bowed^H2331 themselves to the ground^H776 before him.

2Ki 2:16

2Ki 2:16Then they said to him, “Behold now, there are with your servants fifty excellent men, please let them go and search for your master, lest the Spirit of Yahweh has taken him up and cast him on some mountain or into some valley.” And he said, “You shall not send.”

2Ki 2:17

2Ki 2:17But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, “Send.” They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched three days but did not find him.

2Ki 2:18

2Ki 2:18So they returned to him while he was staying at Jericho; and he said to them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Do not go’?”

2Ki 2:19

Then the men^H376 of the city^H5892 said^H559 to Elisha^H477, “Behold^H2009 now, the habitat^H4186 of this city^H5892 is pleasant^H2896, as my lord^H113 sees^H7200; but the water^H4325 is bad^H7451 and the land^H776 [fn]is^H7921 unfruitful^H7921.”

2Ki 2:20

2Ki 2:20And he said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt [fn]in it.” So they brought it to him.

2Ki 2:21

2Ki 2:21And he went out to the spring of water and threw salt [fn]in it and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘I have [fn]purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or barrenness any longer.’”

2Ki 2:22

2Ki 2:22So the waters have been [fn]purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.

2Ki 2:23

Then he went^H5927 up^H5927 from there^H8033 to Bethel^H1008; and as he was going^H5927 up^H5927 by the way^H1870, young^H6996 boys^H5288 came^H3318 out^H3318 from the city^H5892 and mocked^H7046 him and said^H559 to him, “Go^H5927 up^H5927, you baldhead^H7142; go^H5927 up^H5927, you baldhead^H7142!”

2Ki 2:24

2Ki 2:24Then he looked behind him and saw them. And he cursed them in the name of Yahweh. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of [fn]their number.
