Jehoahaz Reigns over Israel

In the twenty-third^H6242^H7969 year^H8141 of Joash^H3060 the son^H1121 of Ahaziah^H274, king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, Jehoahaz^H3059 the son^H1121 of Jehu^H3058 became^H4427 king^H4427 over^H5921 Israel^H3478 at Samaria^H8111, and he reigned seventeen^H7651^H6240 years^H8141.

2Ki 13:2

2Ki 13:2And he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel sin; he did not depart from them.

2Ki 13:3

2Ki 13:3So the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He gave them continually into the hand of Hazael king of Aram, and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael.

2Ki 13:4

2Ki 13:4Then Jehoahaz entreated the face of Yahweh, and Yahweh listened to him; for He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them.

2Ki 13:5

2Ki 13:5And Yahweh gave Israel a savior, so that they came out from under the hand of the Arameans; and the sons of Israel lived in their tents as formerly.

2Ki 13:6

2Ki 13:6Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel sin, but walked in [fn]them; and the Asherah also remained standing in Samaria.

2Ki 13:7

2Ki 13:7For he did not leave to Jehoahaz any people for the army except 50 horsemen and 10 chariots and 10,000 foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had caused them to perish and made them like the dust at threshing.

2Ki 13:8

2Ki 13:8Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

2Ki 13:9

2Ki 13:9And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son became king in his place.

Jehoash Reigns over Israel

2Ki 13:10

In the thirty-seventh^H7970^H7651 year^H8141 of Joash^H3060 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, Jehoash^H3060 the son^H1121 of Jehoahaz^H3059 became^H4427 king^H4427 over^H5921 Israel^H3478 in Samaria^H8111 and reigned sixteen^H8337^H6240 years^H8141.

2Ki 13:11

2Ki 13:11And he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel sin, but he walked in [fn]them.

2Ki 13:12

2Ki 13:12Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

2Ki 13:13

2Ki 13:13So Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat on his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

The Death of Elisha

2Ki 13:14

Now Elisha^H477 [fn]became^H2470 sick^H2470 with the illness^H2483 of which^H834 he was to die^H4191. So Joash^H3060 the king^H4428 of Israel^H3478 came^H3381 down^H3381 to him and wept^H1058 over^H5921 [fn]him and said^H559, “My father^H1, my father^H1, the chariots^H7393 of Israel^H3478 and its horsemen^H6571!”

2Ki 13:15

2Ki 13:15And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he [fn]took a bow and arrows.

2Ki 13:16

2Ki 13:16Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” And he put his hand on it, then Elisha placed his hands on the king’s hands.

2Ki 13:17

2Ki 13:17And he said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. And he said, “Yahweh’s arrow of salvation, even the arrow of salvation over Aram; for you will strike the Arameans at Aphek until you have consumed them.”

2Ki 13:18

2Ki 13:18Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground,” and he struck it three times and stood still.

2Ki 13:19

2Ki 13:19So the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck five or six times, then you would have struck Aram until you would have consumed it. But now you shall strike Aram only three times.”

2Ki 13:20

And Elisha^H477 died^H4191, and they buried^H6912 him. Now the marauding^H1416 bands^H1416 of the Moabites^H4124 would enter^H935 into the land^H776 in the spring^H935 of the year^H8141.

2Ki 13:21

2Ki 13:21Now it happened that they were burying a man, and behold, they saw a marauding band; and they cast the man into the grave of Elisha. And when the man [fn]touched the bones of Elisha he became alive and stood up on his feet.

2Ki 13:22

Now Hazael^H2371 king^H4428 of Aram^H758 had oppressed^H3905 Israel^H3478 all^H3605 the days^H3117 of Jehoahaz^H3059.

2Ki 13:23

2Ki 13:23But Yahweh was gracious to them and had compassion on them and turned to them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not bring them to ruin or cast them from His presence until now.

2Ki 13:24

Then Hazael^H2371 king^H4428 of Aram^H758 died^H4191, and Ben-hadad^H1130 his son^H1121 became^H4427 king^H4427 in^H8478 his place^H8478.

2Ki 13:25

2Ki 13:25Then Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again from the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken in war from the hand of Jehoahaz his father. Three times Joash struck him and recovered the cities of Israel.
