Athaliah Reigns over Judah

(2Ch 22:10–12 )

Now Athaliah^H6271 the mother^H517 of Ahaziah^H274 saw^H7200 that her son^H1121 had died^H4191. So she rose^H6965 and caused^H6 all^H3605 the royal^H4467 seed^H2233 to perish^H6.

2Ki 11:2

2Ki 11:2But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death.

2Ki 11:3

2Ki 11:3So he was hidden away with her in the house of Yahweh six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

2Ki 11:4

Now in the seventh^H7637 year^H8141 Jehoiada^H3077 sent^H7971 for and took^H3947 the commanders^H8269 of hundreds^H3967 of the Carites^H3746 and of the [fn]guard^H7323, and brought^H935 them to him in^H935 the house^H1004 of Yahweh^H3068. Then he cut^H3772 a covenant^H1285 with them and had^H7650 them^H7650 swear^H7650 in the house^H1004 of Yahweh^H3068, and showed^H7200 them the king’s^H4428 son^H1121.

2Ki 11:5And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: one-third of you, who come in on the sabbath and keep watch over the king’s house

2Ki 11:6

2Ki 11:6(one-third also shall be at the gate Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the [fn]guards), [fn]shall keep watch over the house for defense.

2Ki 11:7

2Ki 11:7“And two parts of you, even all who go out on the sabbath, shall also keep watch over the house of Yahweh for the king.

2Ki 11:8

2Ki 11:8“And you shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

2Ki 11:9

So the commanders^H8269 of hundreds^H3967 did^H6213 according to all^H3605 that Jehoiada^H3077 the priest^H3548 commanded^H6680. And each^H376 one^H376 of them took^H3947 his men^H376 who were to come^H935 in^H935 on the sabbath^H7676, with^H5973 those who were to go^H3318 out^H3318 on the sabbath^H7676, and came^H935 to Jehoiada^H3077 the priest^H3548.

2Ki 11:10Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and small shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of Yahweh.

2Ki 11:11

2Ki 11:11And the [fn]guards stood each with his weapons in his hand, from the right [fn]side of the house to the left [fn]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king.

2Ki 11:12Then he brought the king’s son out and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”

2Ki 11:13

Then Athaliah^H6271 heard^H8085 the noise^H6963 of the guard^H7323 and of the people^H5971, and she came^H935 to the people^H5971 in^H935 the house^H1004 of Yahweh^H3068.

2Ki 11:14

2Ki 11:14And she looked, and behold, the king was standing by the pillar, according to the custom, with the commanders and the [fn]trumpeters beside the king; and all the people of the land were glad and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!”

2Ki 11:15And Jehoiada the priest commanded the commanders of hundreds who were appointed over the military force and said to them, “Bring her out [fn]between the ranks, and whoever follows her put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of Yahweh.”

2Ki 11:16

2Ki 11:16So they [fn]laid hands on her, and she arrived at the horses’ entrance of the king’s house and was put to death there.

2Ki 11:17

Then Jehoiada^H3077 cut^H3772 a covenant^H1285 between^H996 Yahweh^H3068 and the king^H4428 and the people^H5971, that they would be the people^H5971 of Yahweh^H3068, also between^H996 the king^H4428 and the people^H5971.

2Ki 11:18

2Ki 11:18And all the people of the land came to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed [fn]overseers over the house of Yahweh.

2Ki 11:19

2Ki 11:19And he took the commanders of hundreds and the Carites and the [fn]guards and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of Yahweh, and came by the way of the gate of the [fn]guards to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
