Uzziah Reigns over Judah

(2Ki 14:21, 22; 15:1–3 )

And all^H3605 the people^H5971 of Judah^H3063 took^H3947 [fn]Uzziah^H5818, who^H1931 was sixteen^H8337^H6240 years^H8141 old^H1121, and made^H4427 him king^H4427 in the place^H8478 of his father^H1 Amaziah^H558.

2Ch 26:2

2Ch 26:2He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his fathers.

2Ch 26:3

2Ch 26:3Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was [fn]Jechiliah of Jerusalem.

2Ch 26:4

2Ch 26:4And he did what was right in the sight of Yahweh, according to all that his father Amaziah had done.

2Ch 26:5

2Ch 26:5And he continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding [fn]through the vision of God; and [fn]as long as he sought Yahweh, God made him succeed.

Uzziah’s Fame Spreads Afar

2Ch 26:6

Then he went^H3318 out^H3318 and fought^H3898 against the Philistines^H6430, and broke^H6555 down^H6555 the wall^H2346 of Gath^H1661 and the wall^H2346 of Jabneh^H2996 and the wall^H2346 of Ashdod^H795; and he built^H1129 cities^H5892 in the area of Ashdod^H795 and among the Philistines^H6430.

2Ch 26:7

2Ch 26:7And God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites.

2Ch 26:8

2Ch 26:8The Ammonites also gave tribute to Uzziah, and his [fn]fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.

2Ch 26:9

2Ch 26:9Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate and at the Valley Gate and at the corner buttress and strengthened them.

2Ch 26:10

2Ch 26:10He also built towers in the wilderness and hewed many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the [fn]Shephelah and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil.

2Ch 26:11

2Ch 26:11Moreover, Uzziah had a military force which could wage war, which went out for military duty by divisions according to the number of their muster, prepared by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s officials.

2Ch 26:12

2Ch 26:12The total number of the heads of the [fn]households, of mighty men of valor, was 2,600.

2Ch 26:13

2Ch 26:13And under their hand was a [fn]mighty army of 307,500, who could wage war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.

2Ch 26:14

2Ch 26:14Moreover, Uzziah prepared [fn]for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and stones for sling.

2Ch 26:15

2Ch 26:15In Jerusalem he also made devices of war devised by skillful designers to be on the towers and on the corners for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. Hence his [fn]fame spread afar, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

Uzziah’s Pride

(2Ki 15:4–7 )

2Ch 26:16

But when he became^H2393 strong^H2393, his heart^H3820 was^H1361 so [fn]proud^H1361 that he acted^H7843 corruptly^H7843, and he was^H4603 unfaithful^H4603 to Yahweh^H3068 his God^H430. And he entered^H935 the temple^H1964 of Yahweh^H3068 to burn^H6999 incense^H6999 on the altar^H4196 of incense^H7004.

2Ch 26:17

2Ch 26:17Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of Yahweh, men of valor.

2Ch 26:18

2Ch 26:18And they stood against Uzziah the king and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to Yahweh, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are set apart as holy to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from Yahweh God.”

2Ch 26:19

2Ch 26:19But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of Yahweh, beside the altar of incense.

2Ch 26:20

2Ch 26:20And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they hurried him out of there, and he himself also hastened to get out because Yahweh had smitten him.

2Ch 26:21

2Ch 26:21So King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death; and he lived in a separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of Yahweh. And Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.

Now the rest^H3499 of the acts^H1697 of Uzziah^H5818, first^H7223 to last^H314, the prophet^H5030 Isaiah^H3470, the son^H1121 of Amoz^H531, has written^H3789.

2Ch 26:23

2Ch 26:23So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said, “He is a leper.” And Jotham his son became king in his place.
