Jehoiada Makes Joash King

(2Ki 11:4–12 )

Now in the seventh^H7637 year^H8141 Jehoiada^H3077 strengthened^H2388 himself, and took^H3947 commanders^H8269 of hundreds^H3967: Azariah^H5838 the son^H1121 of Jeroham^H3395, Ishmael^H3458 the son^H1121 of Johanan^H3076, Azariah^H5838 the son^H1121 of Obed^H5744, Maaseiah^H4641 the son^H1121 of Adaiah^H5718, and Elishaphat^H478 the son^H1121 of Zichri^H2147, and they entered into a covenant^H1285 with him.

2Ch 23:2

2Ch 23:2And they went around Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of the fathers’ households of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.

2Ch 23:3

2Ch 23:3Then all the assembly cut a covenant with the king in the house of God. And [fn]Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the sons of David.

2Ch 23:4

2Ch 23:4“This is the thing which you shall do: one-third of you, of the priests and Levites who come in on the sabbath, shall be gatekeepers at the thresholds,

2Ch 23:5

2Ch 23:5and one-third shall be at the king’s house, and a third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of Yahweh.

2Ch 23:6

2Ch 23:6“But let no one enter the house of Yahweh except the priests and the ministering Levites; they may enter, for they are holy. And let all the people keep the charge of Yahweh.

2Ch 23:7

2Ch 23:7“And the Levites will surround the king, each man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters the house, let him be put to death. And be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.”

2Ch 23:8

So the Levites^H3881 and all^H3605 Judah^H3063 did^H6213 according to all^H3605 that Jehoiada^H3077 the priest^H3548 commanded^H6680. And each^H376 one^H376 of them took^H3947 his men^H376 who were to come^H935 in^H935 on the sabbath^H7676, with those who were to go^H3318 out^H3318 on the sabbath^H7676, for Jehoiada^H3077 the priest^H3548 did not dismiss^H6362 any of the divisions^H4256.

2Ch 23:9

2Ch 23:9Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and the shields and small shields which had been King David’s, which were in the house of God.

2Ch 23:10

2Ch 23:10And he caused all the people to stand, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right [fn]side of the house to the left [fn]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king.

2Ch 23:11

2Ch 23:11Then they brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said, “Long live the king!”

Athaliah Put to Death

2Ch 23:12

Then Athaliah^H6271 heard^H8085 the noise^H6963 of the people^H5971 running^H7323 and praising^H1984 the king^H4428, so she came^H935 into the house^H1004 of Yahweh^H3068 to the people^H5971.

2Ch 23:13

2Ch 23:13And she looked, and behold, the king was standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the commanders and the [fn]trumpeters were beside the king. And all the people of the land were glad and blew trumpets, the singers with their musical instruments [fn]leading the praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and said, “Treason! Treason!”

2Ch 23:14

2Ch 23:14Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the commanders of hundreds who were appointed over the military force and said to them, “Bring her out [fn]between the ranks; and whoever follows her, let him be put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “You shall not put her to death in the house of Yahweh.”

2Ch 23:15

2Ch 23:15So they laid hands on her, and when she arrived at the entrance of the Horse Gate of the king’s house, they put her to death there.

Jehoiada Cuts a Covenant

2Ch 23:16

Then Jehoiada^H3077 cut^H3772 a covenant^H1285 between^H996 himself and all^H3605 the people^H5971 and the king^H4428, that they would be the people^H5971 of Yahweh^H3068.

2Ch 23:17

2Ch 23:17And all the people came to the house of Baal and tore it down, and his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

2Ch 23:18

2Ch 23:18And Jehoiada placed the assignments concerning the house of Yahweh in the hand of the Levitical priests, whom David had divided by lot to be over the house of Yahweh, to offer the burnt offerings of Yahweh, as it is written in the law of Moses—with gladness and singing according to the [fn]order of David.

2Ch 23:19

2Ch 23:19And he caused the gatekeepers of the house of Yahweh to stand, so that no one would enter who was in any way unclean.

2Ch 23:20

2Ch 23:20And he took the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of Yahweh, and they came through the upper gate to the king’s house. And they sat the king upon the royal throne.
