Jehoram Reigns over Judah

(1Ki 22:50; 2Ki 8:16–24 )

And Jehoshaphat^H3092 slept^H7901 with his fathers^H1 and was buried^H6912 with his fathers^H1 in the city^H5892 of David^H1732, and Jehoram^H3088 his son^H1121 became^H4427 king^H4427 in^H8478 his place^H8478.

2Ch 21:2

2Ch 21:2Now he had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, [fn]Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

2Ch 21:3

2Ch 21:3And their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and precious things, with fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

2Ch 21:4

So Jehoram^H3088 arose^H6965 over^H5921 the kingdom^H4467 of his father^H1 and strengthened^H2388 himself, and he killed^H2026 all^H3605 his brothers^H251 with the sword^H2719, and some^H4480 of the commanders^H8269 of Israel^H3478 also^H1571.

2Ch 21:5

2Ch 21:5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

2Ch 21:6

2Ch 21:6And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh.

2Ch 21:7

2Ch 21:7However, Yahweh was not willing to make the house of David a ruin because of the covenant which He had cut with David, and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.

Revolt Against Judah

2Ch 21:8

In his days^H3117 Edom^H123 revolted^H6586 from^H4480 under^H8478 the hand^H3027 of Judah^H3063 and made^H4427 a king^H4428 over^H5921 themselves.

2Ch 21:9

2Ch 21:9Then Jehoram crossed over with his commanders and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck down the Edomites who were surrounding him and the commanders of the chariots.

2Ch 21:10

2Ch 21:10So Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time from under his hand, because he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers.

2Ch 21:11

2Ch 21:11Moreover, he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the harlot and drove Judah astray.

2Ch 21:12

Then a letter^H4385 came^H935 to him from Elijah^H452 the prophet^H5030 saying^H559, “Thus^H3541 says^H559 Yahweh^H3068, the God^H430 of your father^H1 David^H1732, ‘Because^H8478^H834 you have not walked^H1980 in the ways^H1870 of Jehoshaphat^H3092 your father^H1 and the ways^H1870 of Asa^H609 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063,

2Ch 21:13

2Ch 21:13but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the harlot as the house of Ahab played the harlot, and you have also killed your brothers, [fn]your own family, who were better than you,

2Ch 21:14

2Ch 21:14behold, Yahweh is going to smite your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a great [fn]calamity;

2Ch 21:15

2Ch 21:15and you will suffer [fn]severe sickness, a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the sickness, day by day.’”

2Ch 21:16

Then Yahweh^H3068 stirred^H5782 up^H5782 against^H5921 Jehoram^H3088 the spirit^H7307 of the Philistines^H6430 and the Arabs^H6163 who^H834 [fn]bordered^H5921^H3027 the Ethiopians^H3569;

2Ch 21:17

2Ch 21:17and they went up against Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions found in the king’s house together with his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except [fn]Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

2Ch 21:18

So after^H310 all^H3605 this^H2088 Yahweh^H3068 smote^H5062 him in his bowels^H4578 with an incurable^H369^H4832 sickness^H2483.

2Ch 21:19

2Ch 21:19Now it happened in the course of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels came out because of his sickness and he died with this greatly painful disease. And his people made no fire for him like the fire for his fathers.

2Ch 21:20

2Ch 21:20He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years; and he departed [fn]with no one’s regret, and they buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
