Rehoboam’s Foolish Reign

(1Ki 12:1–19 )

Then Rehoboam^H7346 went^H1980 to Shechem^H7927, for all^H3605 Israel^H3478 had come^H935 to Shechem^H7927 to make^H4427 him king^H4427.

2Ch 10:2

2Ch 10:2And it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt.

2Ch 10:3

2Ch 10:3Then they sent and called for him. And Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

2Ch 10:4

2Ch 10:4“Your father made our yoke harsh; but now, lighten the harsh service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

2Ch 10:5

2Ch 10:5Then he said to them, “Return to me again in three days.” So the people went away.

2Ch 10:6

Then King^H4428 Rehoboam^H7346 took^H3289 counsel^H3289 with the elders^H2205 who^H834 had^H1961 [fn]stood^H5975 before^H6440 his father^H1 Solomon^H8010 while he was still alive^H2416, saying^H559, “How^H349 do you counsel^H3289 me to respond^H7725^H1697 to this^H2088 people^H5971?”

2Ch 10:7

2Ch 10:7And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

2Ch 10:8

2Ch 10:8But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had counseled him, and took counsel with the young men who grew up with him and [fn]stood before him.

2Ch 10:9

2Ch 10:9So he said to them, “What counsel do you give that we may respond to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”

2Ch 10:10

2Ch 10:10Then the young men who grew up with him spoke with him, saying, “Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us.’ Thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins!

2Ch 10:11

2Ch 10:11‘So now my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

2Ch 10:12

So Jeroboam^H3379 and all^H3605 the people^H5971 came^H935 to Rehoboam^H7346 on the third^H7992 day^H3117 as the king^H4428 had spoken^H1696, saying^H559, “Return^H7725 to me on the third^H7992 day^H3117.”

2Ch 10:13

2Ch 10:13And the king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders,

2Ch 10:14

2Ch 10:14and he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “[fn]My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”

2Ch 10:15

2Ch 10:15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of events from God, that Yahweh might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

2Ch 10:16

Now all^H3605 Israel^H3478 saw that the king^H4428 did not listen^H8085 to them. So the people^H5971 responded^H7725 to the king^H4428, saying^H559,

“What^H4100 portion^H2506 do we have in David^H1732?

We have no^H3808 inheritance^H5159 in the son^H1121 of Jesse^H3448.

Every^H376 man^H376 to your tents^H168, O Israel^H3478;

Now^H6258 see^H7200 to your own house^H1004, David^H1732.”

So all^H3605 Israel^H3478 went^H1980 to their tents^H168.

2Ch 10:17

2Ch 10:17But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

2Ch 10:18

2Ch 10:18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labor, and the sons of Israel [fn]stoned him and he died. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

2Ch 10:19

2Ch 10:19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
