The Death of Saul and His Sons

(1Ch 10:1–14 )

Now the Philistines^H6430 were fighting^H3898 against Israel^H3478, and the men^H376 of Israel^H3478 fled^H5127 from before^H6440 the Philistines^H6430 and fell^H5307 slain^H2491 on Mount^H2022 Gilboa^H1533.

1Sa 31:2

1Sa 31:2And the Philistines closely pursued Saul and his sons; and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

1Sa 31:3

1Sa 31:3And the battle became heavy against Saul, and the archers [fn]hit him; and he was badly wounded by the archers.

1Sa 31:4

1Sa 31:4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and pierce me through and abuse me.” But his armor bearer was not willing, for he was greatly afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it.

1Sa 31:5

1Sa 31:5Then his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, so he also fell on his sword and died with him.

1Sa 31:6

1Sa 31:6Thus Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together.

1Sa 31:7

Then the men^H376 of Israel^H3478 who^H834 were on the other^H5676 side^H5676 of the valley^H6010, with those who^H834 were beyond^H5676 the Jordan^H3383, saw^H7200 that the men^H376 of Israel^H3478 had fled^H5127 and that Saul^H7586 and his sons^H1121 were dead^H4191. So they forsook^H5800 the cities^H5892 and fled^H5127; and the Philistines^H6430 came^H935 and lived^H3427 in them.

1Sa 31:8

Now it happened^H1961 on the [fn]next^H4283 day^H4283, that the Philistines^H6430 came^H935 to strip^H6584 the slain^H2491, and they found^H4672 Saul^H7586 and his three^H7969 sons^H1121 fallen^H5307 on Mount^H2022 Gilboa^H1533.

1Sa 31:9

1Sa 31:9Then they cut off his head and stripped off his weapons and sent them all around the land of the Philistines, to proclaim the good news to the house of their idols and to the people.

1Sa 31:10

1Sa 31:10And they placed his weapons in the [fn]house of Ashtaroth and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

1Sa 31:11

1Sa 31:11Then the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard [fn]what the Philistines had done to Saul,

1Sa 31:12

1Sa 31:12so all the valiant men arose and walked all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.

1Sa 31:13

1Sa 31:13And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
