David Escapes from Saul

Then Saul^H7586 spoke^H1696 with Jonathan^H3083 his son^H1121 and all^H3605 his servants^H5650 to put^H4191 David^H1732 to^H4191 death^H4191. But Jonathan^H3083, Saul’s^H7586 son^H1121, greatly^H3966 delighted^H2654 in David^H1732.

1Sa 19:2

1Sa 19:2So Jonathan told David saying, “Saul my father is seeking to put you to death. So now, please be careful in the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself.

1Sa 19:3

1Sa 19:3“And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you; what I [fn]perceive, I will tell you.”

1Sa 19:4

1Sa 19:4Then Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Do not let the king sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his works have been very good for you.

1Sa 19:5

1Sa 19:5“For he took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great salvation for all Israel; you saw it and were glad. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?”

1Sa 19:6

1Sa 19:6And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death.”

1Sa 19:7

1Sa 19:7Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as formerly.

1Sa 19:8

Then there was war^H4421 again^H3254. And David^H1732 went^H3318 out^H3318 and fought^H3898 with the Philistines^H6430 and struck^H5221 them with a great^H1419 slaughter^H4347, so that they fled^H5127 before^H4480^H6440 him.

1Sa 19:9

1Sa 19:9Now there was an evil spirit from Yahweh on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing the harp with his hand.

1Sa 19:10

1Sa 19:10And Saul tried to [fn]pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, so that he [fn]stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

1Sa 19:11

Then Saul^H7586 sent^H7971 messengers^H4397 to David’s^H1732 house^H1004 to keep^H8104 watch^H8104 over him, in order to put^H4191 him to^H4191 death^H4191 in the morning^H1242. But Michal^H4324, David’s^H1732 wife^H802, told^H5046 him, saying^H559, “If^H518 you do not make^H4422 an escape^H4422 for your life^H5315 tonight^H3915, tomorrow^H4279 you will be put^H4191 to^H4191 death^H4191.”

1Sa 19:12So Michal let David down through a window, and he went out and fled and escaped.

1Sa 19:13

1Sa 19:13Then Michal took the [fn]household idol and laid it on the bed and put a quilt of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with clothes.

1Sa 19:14

1Sa 19:14Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but she said, “He is sick.”

1Sa 19:15

1Sa 19:15So Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me on [fn]his bed, that I may put him to death.”

1Sa 19:16

1Sa 19:16The messengers came, and behold, the [fn]household idol was on the bed with the quilt of goats’ hair at its head.

1Sa 19:17

1Sa 19:17So Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal said to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I put you to death?’”

1Sa 19:18

Now David^H1732 fled^H1272 and escaped^H4422 and came^H935 to Samuel^H8050 at Ramah^H7414 and told^H5046 him all^H3605 that Saul^H7586 had done^H6213 to him. And he and Samuel^H8050 went^H1980 and stayed^H3427 in Naioth^H5121.

1Sa 19:19And it was told to Saul, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.”

1Sa 19:20

1Sa 19:20Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them. And the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and they also prophesied.

1Sa 19:21

1Sa 19:21This was told to Saul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. So Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.

1Sa 19:22

1Sa 19:22Then he himself went to Ramah and came as far as the large well that is in Secu; and he asked and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.”

1Sa 19:23

1Sa 19:23So he went there, to Naioth in Ramah; and the Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

1Sa 19:24

1Sa 19:24He also stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and [fn]lay down [fn]naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
