Solomon Turns from Yahweh

Now King^H4428 Solomon^H8010 loved^H157 many^H7227 foreign^H5237 women^H802 along with the daughter^H1323 of Pharaoh^H6547: Moabite^H4125, Ammonite^H5984, Edomite^H130, Sidonian^H6722, and Hittite^H2850 women^H802,

1Ki 11:2

1Ki 11:2from the nations concerning which Yahweh had said to the sons of Israel, “You shall not [fn]go along with them, nor shall they [fn]go along with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love.

1Ki 11:3

1Ki 11:3And he had 700 wives—princesses—and 300 concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.

1Ki 11:4

1Ki 11:4Now it happened at the time that Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not [fn]wholly devoted to Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

1Ki 11:5

1Ki 11:5For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians and after [fn]Milcom the detestable idol of the Ammonites.

1Ki 11:6

1Ki 11:6And Solomon did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and did not follow Yahweh fully, as David his father had done.

1Ki 11:7

1Ki 11:7Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable idol of Moab, on the mountain which is [fn]east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the detestable idol of the sons of Ammon.

1Ki 11:8

1Ki 11:8Thus also he did for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

1Ki 11:9

Now Yahweh^H3068 was angry^H599 with Solomon^H8010 because^H3588 his heart^H3824 was turned^H5186 away^H5186 from Yahweh^H3068, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478, who had appeared^H7200 to him twice^H6471,

1Ki 11:10

1Ki 11:10and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not walk after other gods; but he did not keep what Yahweh had commanded.

1Ki 11:11

1Ki 11:11So Yahweh said to Solomon, “Because this has happened with you: you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, so I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.

1Ki 11:12

1Ki 11:12“Nevertheless I will not do it in your days for the sake of your father David, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

1Ki 11:13

1Ki 11:13“However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen.”

Yahweh Raises Up Adversaries

1Ki 11:14

Then Yahweh^H3068 raised^H6965 up^H6965 an adversary^H7854 to Solomon^H8010, Hadad^H1908 the Edomite^H130; he was of the seed^H2233 of the king^H4428 in Edom^H123.

1Ki 11:15

Now it happened^H1961 that when David^H1732 was in Edom^H123, and Joab^H3097 the commander^H8269 of the army^H6635 had gone^H5927 up^H5927 to bury^H6912 the slain^H2491, and had struck^H5221 down^H5221 every^H3605 male^H2145 in Edom^H123

1Ki 11:16

1Ki 11:16(for Joab and all Israel stayed there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom),

1Ki 11:17

1Ki 11:17that Hadad fled [fn]to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, while Hadad was a young boy.

1Ki 11:18

1Ki 11:18Then they arose from Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt. And he gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land.

1Ki 11:19

1Ki 11:19And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh. So he gave him as a wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.

1Ki 11:20

1Ki 11:20And the sister of Tahpenes bore his son Genubath. And Tahpenes weaned him in Pharaoh’s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh.

1Ki 11:21

But Hadad^H1908 heard^H8085 in Egypt^H4714 that David^H1732 slept^H7901 with his fathers^H1 and that Joab^H3097 the commander^H8269 of the army^H6635 had died^H4191. So Hadad^H1908 said^H559 to Pharaoh^H6547, “Send^H7971 me away^H7971, that I may go^H1980 to my own country^H776.”

1Ki 11:22

1Ki 11:22Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you are seeking to go to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing; nevertheless you must surely [fn]let me go.”

1Ki 11:23

And God^H430 raised^H6965 up^H6965 another adversary^H7854 to him, Rezon^H7331 the son^H1121 of Eliada^H450, who^H834 had fled^H1272 from his lord^H113 Hadadezer^H1909 king^H4428 of Zobah^H6678.

1Ki 11:24

1Ki 11:24And he gathered men to himself and became commander of a marauding band, after David killed some of [fn]them; and they went to Damascus and stayed [fn]there, and reigned in Damascus.

1Ki 11:25

1Ki 11:25So he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad did; and he abhorred Israel and reigned over Aram.

1Ki 11:26

Now Jeroboam^H3379 the son^H1121 of Nebat^H5028, an Ephraimite^H673 of Zeredah^H6868, Solomon’s^H8010 servant^H5650, whose mother’s^H517 name^H8034 was Zeruah^H6871, a widow^H490, also [fn]raised^H7311 his hand^H3027 against the king^H4428.

1Ki 11:27

1Ki 11:27Now this was the reason why he [fn]raised his hand against the king: Solomon built the [fn]Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of his father David.

1Ki 11:28

1Ki 11:28Now the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor. And Solomon saw that the young man was [fn]industrious and appointed him over all the load-bearers of the house of Joseph.

1Ki 11:29

1Ki 11:29Now it happened at that time, that Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, and that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now [fn]he had covered himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field.

1Ki 11:30

1Ki 11:30Then Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him and tore it into twelve pieces.

1Ki 11:31

1Ki 11:31And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes,

1Ki 11:32

1Ki 11:32but he will have one tribe, for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel,

1Ki 11:33

1Ki 11:33because they have forsaken Me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon; and they have not walked in My ways to do what is right in My sight and to keep My statutes and My judgments, as his father David did.

1Ki 11:34

1Ki 11:34‘Nevertheless I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him [fn]ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of My servant David whom I chose, who kept My commandments and My statutes;

1Ki 11:35

1Ki 11:35but I will take the kingdom from his son’s hand and give it to you—the ten tribes.

1Ki 11:36

1Ki 11:36‘But to his son I will give one tribe, that My servant David may have a lamp always before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name.

1Ki 11:37

1Ki 11:37‘And I will take you, and you shall reign over whatever your soul desires, and you shall be king over Israel.

1Ki 11:38

1Ki 11:38‘Then it will be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight to keep My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you and build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.

1Ki 11:39

1Ki 11:39‘Thus I will afflict the seed of David for this, but not always.’”

1Ki 11:40

1Ki 11:40Solomon sought therefore to put Jeroboam to death; but Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt to Shishak king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
