Genesis 35 :: Hebrew Names Version (HNV)

Gen 35:1God said to Ya`akov, "Arise, go up to Beit-El, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esav your brother."
Gen 35:2Then Ya`akov said to his household, and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, change your garments.
Gen 35:3Let us arise, and go up to Beit-El. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went."
Gen 35:4They gave to Ya`akov all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Ya`akov hid them under the oak which was by Shekhem.
Gen 35:5They traveled: and a terror of God was on the cities that were round about them, and they didn't pursue the sons of Ya`akov.
Gen 35:6So Ya`akov came to Luz, which is in the land of Kana`an (the same is Beit-El), he and all the people who were with him.
Gen 35:7He built an altar there, and called the place El-Beit-El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
Gen 35:8Devorah, Rivka's nurse, died, and she was buried below Beit-El under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon-Bakhut.

Jacob Is Named Israel

Gen 35:9God appeared to Ya`akov again, when he came from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him.
Gen 35:10God said to him, "Your name is Ya`akov. Your name shall not be Ya`akov any more, but your name will be Yisra'el." He named him Yisra'el.
Gen 35:11God said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your loins.
Gen 35:12The land which I gave to Avraham and Yitzchak, I will give it to you, and to your seed after you will I give the land."
Gen 35:13God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.
Gen 35:14Ya`akov set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink-offering on it, and poured oil on it.
Gen 35:15Ya`akov called the name of the place where God spoke with him "Beit-El."
Gen 35:16They traveled from Beit-El. There was still some distance to come to Efrat, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labor.
Gen 35:17It happened that, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid, for now you will have another son."
Gen 35:18It happened, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni, but his father named him Binyamin.
Gen 35:19Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Efrat (the same is Beit-Lechem).
Gen 35:20Ya`akov set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
Gen 35:21Yisra'el traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of `Eder.
Gen 35:22It happened, while Yisra'el lived in that land, that Re'uven went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Yisra'el heard of it. Now the sons of Ya`akov were twelve.

The Sons of Israel

Gen 35:23The sons of Le'ah: Re'uven (Ya`akov's firstborn), Shim`on, Levi, Yehudah, Yissakhar, and Zevulun.
Gen 35:24The sons of Rachel: Yosef and Binyamin.
Gen 35:25The sons of Bilhah (Rachel's handmaid): Dan and Naftali.
Gen 35:26The sons of Zilpah (Le'ah's handmaid): Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Ya`akov, who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.
Gen 35:27Ya`akov came to Yitzchak his father, to Mamre, to Kiryat-Arba (the same is Hevron), where Avraham and Yitzchak lived as foreigners.
Gen 35:28The days of Yitzchak were one hundred eighty years.
Gen 35:29Yitzchak gave up the spirit, and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esav and Ya`akov, his sons, buried him.
