1 Timothy 3 :: Darby Translation (DBY)

1Ti 3:1

1Ti 3:1The word is faithful: if any one aspires to exercise oversight, he desires a good work.

1Ti 3:2

1Ti 3:2The overseer then must be irreproachable, husband of one wife, sober, discreet, decorous, hospitable, apt to teach;

1Ti 3:3

1Ti 3:3not given to excesses from wine, not a striker, but mild, not addicted to contention, not fond of money,

1Ti 3:4

1Ti 3:4conducting his own house well, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

1Ti 3:5

1Ti 3:5(but if one does not know how to conduct his own house, how shall he take care of the assembly of God?)

1Ti 3:6

1Ti 3:6not a novice, that he may not, being inflated, fall into the fault of the devil.

1Ti 3:7

1Ti 3:7But it is necessary that he should have also a good testimony from those without, that he may fall not into reproach and the snare of the devil.

1Ti 3:8

1Ti 3:8Ministers, in like manner, grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not seeking gain by base means,

1Ti 3:9

1Ti 3:9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

1Ti 3:10

1Ti 3:10And let these be first proved, then let them minister, being without charge against them.

1Ti 3:11

1Ti 3:11The women in like manner grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

1Ti 3:12

1Ti 3:12Let the ministers be husbands of one wife, conducting their children and their own houses well:

1Ti 3:13

1Ti 3:13for those who shall have ministered well obtain for themselves a good degree, and much boldness in faith which is in Christ Jesus.

1Ti 3:14

1Ti 3:14These things I write to thee, hoping to come to thee more quickly;

1Ti 3:15

1Ti 3:15but if I delay, in order that thou mayest know how one ought to conduct oneself in God's house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and base of the truth.

1Ti 3:16

1Ti 3:16And confessedly the mystery of piety is great. God has been manifested in flesh, has been justified in the Spirit, has appeared to angels, has been preached among the nations, has been believed on in the world, has been received up in glory.

In 1867, John Nelson Darby translated the New Testament from Greek into English. Further revisions were done in 1872 and 1884. Darby’s work was first published as The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. After Darby’s death in 1882, some of his students worked together to produce the complete Darby Bible based on the Masoretic Hebrew text, Darby’s German (Elberfelder), and the French (Pau) translations. In 1890, the first complete Darby Bible was published in English. This translation of the Bible is in the public domain.
